So true!! You must be true to your wishes in the end. I deal with ladies everyday who are looking for eco friendly wedding favors and I love it when they know what they want and they ask for it.

I did everything myself for my wedding. How else could I have had it exactly as I wanted? I made the invitations, designed the dresses (my mother made them to save me time), put together the bouquets, decorated the cake, etc... I sound like some crazy person who has to have everything just right, but I was totally fine with the minor imperfections that go along with trying to do everything. It was my mom and one of my bridesmaids who were crazy balls of stress!!! It came out very nicely. We rented four campsites right next to each other for the wedding and reception - $40 for the whole day, secluded from other campsites, and the prettiest location I could find anyways! The food was, uh, potluck. lol... That part might be slightly embarrassing. Then my mom asked the guests for help cleaning up after, which I wasn't expecting. The groomsmen should have been enough help. But I was gone by that time so I try to forget about it. :)

Very true -- I think your wedding style should be inspired by you as a couple. There are too many cookie cutter weddings out there which is why I LOVE the brides that come my way, because I know they're doing their own thing :)

I guess I'm a romantic, because I love that lace wedding dress! It sure out classes the poofy early 90s dress I wore!

My wedding was romantic and very simple. 4 months from the moment we proposed to each other (yes we both took a knee and both got rings) to the moment we said "I do". It wasn't a shotgun wedding, just a short engagement. I bought a consignment dress, but my mom made a gorgeous blue sash to go around the middle. We got married in a chapel my mother-in-law owns so I got to do all the decorating myself. I even made my own bouquet. I wouldn't change anything if I had to do it again, because we made it our own in every way.

I agree, my wedding is going to be a mix or so many styles, I can tell.

I love the romantic and vintage and glam. Somehow I include them all in one shop and it works! I am all for your suggestion to go hog wild. There is one day you can go over the top, and why the heck not?!? Have fun with it. Be the star you envision. And celebrate with your mate, family and friends... whatever style you choose!

This is why I love designing for weddings! It's fascinating to me to see what inspires brides and what their sense of styles are when it comes to their wedding day.

It's interesting to see so much individual style in weddings these days....the old rules are out the door. It must be so liberating but overwhelming to have so many choices. My 1965 small town wedding was so simple in comparison, but I did feel pretty in my Christian Dior wedding dress (sewn by my mother). It was one of the first patterns I sold here on Etsy, it was nice to be able to pass it on.

I definitely have a girly style...but I plan on having a lot of interesting quirky things at my wedding. For example, lots of seahorse things...lol.

I had SO much fun planning my wedding! I was on Etsy a whole lot... the whole theme ended up being a vintage/natural/wood-sy style, complete with handmade banners and a photo area... the whole day was like a dream... :-)

This is very helpful! I just opened a Vintage Wedding section in my Etsy vintage fashion shop. I acquired a great collection of wedding dresses from the 50s - 80s, now being uploaded into my shop, and wasn't sure how to describe them!

My fiance and I are planning to elope this September in Maine. It will be a fun, exciting, and relaxing way to celebrate becoming husband and wife the way that we want to, and without all of the stress of a large ceremony. Our wedding will be natural, romantic, and vintage inspired - and I plan on making some accessories myself, and purchasing the rest here on Etsy. :)

Not married at the moment...but I veer toward something romantic...definitely something homesewn and knitted (if there's time, but I've no idea). I probably wouldn't do the handknit shawl as so many brides do...I'd go with a vintage veil with some hand knit element or maybe hand knit or crochet the whole wedding dress (if there's time).....

Thanks to Etsy, connecting brides to more personal choices makes it so much easier to get what you want. Buying handmade makes the labour of love all the more unique to oneself. I got married before Esty and we were a 90% handmade wedding, it would have been 99% if Etsy existed!!! Cheers

I have no idea what I'd choose. To be honest, I think that most people are a mix of all of these different styles. I guess that our wedding style is more of an eclectic mix of everything here - and a little more!

If I had it to do all over again I'd go for a Modern wanna-be Glam sorta wedding with hints of Romanitic. So when it comes down to it, I'm totally iconoclastic. LOL- nothing' s changed ;-)

LOVE this part of the piece "No matter what your style, do what makes you happy. Not your mother, not your mother-in-law, not your maid of honor. YOU." They have had or will have or won't have their own. This one is YOURS!! Do what makes you and your beloved happy! We had 35 people, at night, in the garden of an historical house, with our best man as our only attendant, on a Thursday, with a tea as the reception, set up and took everything down ourselves before and after and were back in our apartment by midnight! Small but magical and just what we wanted. I wouldn't have changed a thing!

Me and my sister was talking about her ideal wedding, this is absolutely what she want and love I think, so happy to get inspiration at here !!! I think we both love the idea of modern wedding with some retro details, simple but sophisticate, stylish but not over decorate. ;-)

I loved the dresses! There was not that much iconoclastic in that brief section,however, with the exception of the ring.I can not believe that anyone would use that as a wedding ring. Afraid I agree with Fapbanana, unique would have been a better choice of words.

It is so true that small details are what makes a difference! Rather than getting caught up in the trends, adding little touches that pull each of your personalities - together and separately - into the wedding will have everyone talking about your wedding day for years! Some people thought we were crazy for some of the things that we did - mustaches on a stick to name one! - and we keep hearing about how great of a day it was even a year later!

Weddings styles have stayed the same for so long! Its great that we can sway from the 'norm" and not being shocking, out of the box ideas are so great and unexpected, I think its all about the element of surprise! I love brides they are the most inspiring customers!!!

You are so true to say that "... no wedding can be categorized." :) Every Bride is different and there is really no 'should' and 'should not'. I say, do what your heart says for your big day!!

I went for Romantic, but there are so many choices today, it's possibly to mix and match them to create something unique to every bride. Loved the post!

Just getting married last May really changed my perspective on weddings! I never thought I'd be the DIY everything bride but turns out she was clawing her way out of me... I gave in. We made our invitations, place cards, table numbers, pinwheels for the yard, paper garlands, guest book post cards, bunting for the bar, props and the backdrop for our photo booth, and all of our flowers (bouquets, boutonnieres, pew ties, arches, table decor - all of it) were handmade out of paper. It was crazy. I spent 8 very, very short months working to make everything exactly how WE wanted it and we are still getting compliments! Now I make things for other brides and sell the same things we had at our wedding and more in my Etsy shop. Weddings change everything!

Mine is going to be vintage carnival in my dads backyard. We are going to have games and a big huge curtain to walk through before going down the isle. I always knew I'd be a diy bride, but I never knew that so much of my family was so materialistic and that they'd have a problem with handmade signs and a self made button bouquet, let alone literally every thing else that I did by hand. But I'm going to blow them away. They will see!

A refreshing look at styles! We'd love to pair a ketubah or piece of art for vows with each of these...our artists definitely fit in stylistically with these genres.

I describe my wedding as a country farm lunch. It was casual, relaxed, small, and outdoors in my hometown were I felt most comfortable. We used a reproduction feedsack fabric and I'm not embarrassed to admit, I like a vintage vibe. Wedding can be so fun but so stressful, I think it's really important to do what makes you happy and focus on the things you'll care about long term.

I got married last year and had a scrap book full of things I loved. It made it easier when picking out flowers and dresses etc and is a great keepsake that I enjoy flicking through when I get chance :) Love the fact that brides are turning to handmade items to give their wedding a totally unique edge :)

My wedding was a mix of many styles, but it was completely me and my husband. I too did pretty much everything, because I felt uncomfortable with the other options offered to me. The best compliment I got on my wedding day? "Aw! It's so Isabelle!" :)

I have found that Etsy brides know what they want, have their own style, and are wonderful to work with.

I am planning my wedding now for this September. Growing up, my parents were really poor and they used things like old wooden crates and found wooden ice boxes as furniture in our home. That antique vintage feel has been in my life as long as I can remember and it's all still there today. I"m greatful that today this feel is easily found and is so meaningful.

I love how individual, self-expressive, and festive weddings are these days. I carry a range of styles from the traditional to the edgy, and have been fascinated by what's sold the quickest and the best--wonderful pinks, unusual necklines, fun tiered tulle confections. It's nice to see weddings going back to their roots and becoming celebrations again!

The "Romantic" style is GORGEOUS! And the mirror in the first picture? Stunning! It's definitely one of the most beautiful and unique mirrors I've ever seen!

You are so right about your wedding being only for you and your fiance'. My daughter and her husband had a Roman themed wedding. She was carried down the aisle by 4 toga clad groomsmen in a curtain draped carrier (litter). Her husband also wore a toga as well as the officiente. The bridesmaids wore red gowns with a short toga over their shoulders and no shoes. In lieu of a bouquet, the bridesmaids strew rose petals in her path. The guests threw packets of lavendar and cooled off with hand-made fans that looked like palm leaves. It was very beautiful and very unique. Oh yes it was held in an outside arena. Beautiful.

Thanks for sharing, I love the Modern theme you've put together, seconded by the Iconoclastic one - the latter's very interesting - wonder what designs would fit the iconoclastic wedding in my shops? I absolutely second your advice to just do what makes one happy, a wedding is first, and last, about the couple - and very often they need to be reminded of it as it's so easy to end up trying to please everyone who's involved. For my wedding, I wanted to have a wedding gown with floral embroidery on the skirt and bodice, in shades of red, green and brown - but I was very hesitant as it was so non-traditional, especially here in India where offbeat weddings are a long way coming yet. But my darling Mom, and I do love her so for this, told me - If it's what you want, go ahead, it's YOUR day.

I like the idea of freedom of chosing your style, your wedding day should express who you really are as a couple, and Romantic is not the default style for everyone. Don't be afraid and look for the style/dress/decoration/cake/location you really like, always!

Weddings are a chance like no other to express the personality of the young couple (mostly the bride!) and it's great to see the old traditions being challenged by more expressive styles. Man I love weddings - I want mine again!

I have had so much fun expressing myself with my upcoming wedding. Our wedding is going to really reflect my fiance and I's personalities and interests. If anyone had any doubt that we were uber-geeky music lovers, they won't after the wedding!
