What’s better than a beauty box filled with gorgeous new products to try? One where the box itself is designed by an Etsy seller of course! It’s a genius packaging partnership: ten UK Etsy sellers have each designed a limited edition box, which Birchbox subscribers will receive in a lucky dip, encasing their August subscription. Along with all the fresh goodies inside, they’ll also get a 15% off voucher to spend with their Etsy designer. Over the next week we’re sharing a little more about the designers and the stories behind their patterns. First up, Hannah Richards Design, The Lovely Drawer and Natalie Lea Owen.
Hannah Richards Design
London-based stationery designer, Hannah, brings her bright and cheery paper and ink collage style to the Birchbox dressing table. Her work itself reflects the Birchbox ethos – it’s all about a journey of discovery. Hannah loves to try something new and often starts creating with an open mind. “My graphic print takes inspiration from minimalism and happy accidents,” says Hannah. “I think there is a shameless bravery in keeping a design extremely simple and bold.”
We can see this box being reused by Birchbox customers in all manner of creative ways – it’s perfect for scrapbookers, paper artists or to hold greetings cards, washi tapes and other desktop bits.
The Lovely Drawer
Teri Muncey’s innate talent for delicious colour combinations adds a touch of sunny simplicity to the August Birchbox. With a confident freehand illustration style, Teri’s surface pattern actually came from a quick doodle she made back in June 2015. “I was playing around with ink, creating movement with mark making and I liked the outcome so much that I turned it into my phone case,” says Teri. “When I posted an image of me sporting the case on Instagram I had so many messages about the design I went on to work on a larger repeat pattern using this as my base. I love that it feels dynamic and organic which is why I named it ‘waves’.”
It’s a keeper. This design will look so good in a bright, modern bathroom or bedroom, and after the beauty products have been enjoyed, wouldn’t it be a gorgeous place to store trinkets and keepsakes?
Natalie Lea Owen
Totally tropical! High summer holiday vibes are captured exuberantly by stationery and homeware designer, Natalie, from her London studio. Her self-initiated brief was simple: “I wanted to create a really bright, fun, and happy pattern. So I mixed cute abstract shapes with textured botanical leaves and used lots of cheerful colours.” Mission accomplished. This design has an after-life of playful jewellery box written all over it, and we’re sure it’ll inspire subscribers to pack their Birchbox goodies with them for this year’s sunny getaways. (In fact, check out Natalie’s shop for a matching make-up bag.)
We’ll share more tomorrow! Check back to see the full collection over the course of the week.
