Wrap up warm: Winter coats to fall in love with

Sep 7, 2015

by Alice Young handmade and vintage goods

As it’s a phenomenon that inevitably recurs every year, you’d think that we’d be pretty prepped for the whole changing of the seasons malarky, but the sudden darker evenings and chillier temperatures seem to descend upon us from nowhere. Time to invest in a winter coat!

How can we be soaking up the rays one day and then burrowed under seven layers of clothing the next? Maneuvering oneself through British weather with sartorial success has just got that little bit easier with this selection of on trend handmade and vintage coats…

Faux fur jacket, £99, Bombe Surprise

Bombe Surprise

Fluffy faux fur, statement shearling and anything that brings about an increase in mistaken yeti sightings is big news for autumn and winter. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous choose bright colours or patchwork designs.

Boho poncho, £50, Super Queenie Retro

Super Queenie Retro

The seventies boho trend is here to stay, and the key piece for A/W is the poncho- the more textures, the better. This reversible, tasseled number teamed with a grey roll neck would keep you both on trend and toasty.

Blue suede jacket, £46, BoBo Vintage

BoBo Vintage

If it was acceptable in the eighties, chances are it’s hot stuff this season. Yep; it’s time to whip out the shoulder pads.

Red wool cape, £68, Sartorial Matters

Sartorial Matters

If you have to stick to one hue this season, make it post box red. Plus, capes are the socially acceptable alternative to walking around wrapped in a blanket all day.

Geometric blazer, £25, Popcorn and Cheese

Popcorn and Cheese

Not for the faint hearted; bold, graphic patterns and make-your-eyes-go-funny optical illusions were a designer fave on the catwalks. Team this blazer with a thick knitted scarf to break up the jazziness.

Pink checked jacket, £17.5, Vagabonds Retro

Vagabonds Retro

Geek has never been so chic. Pair this preppy checked jacket with some mismatched wooly accessories and give yourself a gold star.

Oatmeal coat, £68, Bird on a Wire Vintage

Bird on a Wire Vintage

Are you on the hunt for a coat that’s stylish but not too showy? An understated oatmeal colour allows tailoring to take centre stage. Opt for oversized, androgynous and architectural shapes.

The temperature is certainly dropping. Not good as I am still waiting for summer. A few warm days does not qualify as a summer!! The winter is too long as it is. Oh well must get an order for some coal and logs soon. As for the featured items, with me, vintage is either great or crap. Some ideas must have been born on the toilet. Sorry if you think I am moaning just letting you know a little of what I like and not.

If there was a wool coat with "not for the faint hearted" design that you can wear in -25, then I'd be drooling at it every day until I can buy it :D
