Four Corners of Craft: Meet the makers from England

Aug 21, 2015

by Sarah Hewett handmade and vintage goods

The London Design Festival is the highlight of the UK design calendar, where the world gathers to celebrate great craft and design. This year, Etsy makes it’s mark with a selling exhibition of cross-disciplinary contemporary craft on 24-27th September 2015, in partnership with Crafts Council and Tent London. From Inverness to Sussex and Belfast to Cardigan, the Etsy community is a highly talented group of designer-makers, creating beautiful contemporary craft across all areas of the UK.

Selected from almost 1000 applications, we will unite 45 of these makers in an exhibition to represent craft from the four corners of our country… what ties it all together is the quality of making.

Going behind the scenes of the makers and designers exhibition at our Etsy Four Corners of Craft, in our last sneak peek post we revealed three of our Scottish sellers here. Next up, we travelled down south to visit three of our sellers living in England and suss out their studios…

Daisy Choi

Based in her Clerkenwell studio, award winning designer Daisy Choi handmakes her intricate and individually designed Day C London jewellery collection. Inspired by everyday objects, Daisy blends artistic expression with wearability, using gold and silver with precious gems including diamonds and pearls.

With a background in graphic design, it wasn’t until after working in Hong Kong and the UK for many years did she then devote her full attention to her jewellery design. Now her beautiful work has travelled around the world, being exhibited in prestigious galleries, museums and design fairs.

‘I first heard about Etsy from a customer who was from America around two years ago. I find it an amazing place for individual designer /maker to sell and buy the unique handmade goods from other side of the world and also can share the stories with other creative people online.’

Haidée Drew

Haidée Drew is a designer with passion for interior accessories, educated at the Royal College of Art and with a background in contemporary craft, her designs focus on unique decorative styles with a modern edge.

Her collections of interior accessories have a visual dialogue with the past, it’s inspiration taken from historical collections to create functional design with a sense of nostalgia whilst retaining a strong contemporary aesthetic.

With each piece hand assembled and finished at Sugarhouse Studios in East London, the design process and materials are as equally important as aesthetic.

Ikuko Iwamoto

Having studied ceramics in Japan, Etsy seller Ikuko came to London in 2001 to develop her skills further at the Royal College of Art. Using the slip-casting technique, her contemporary and tactile designs echo her research with the visually impaired during her time at the RCA. Inspired by the favoured pastime of tea drinking and the idea of a ‘bizarre tea ceremony’, her functional ceramics suggest the everyday but are, in fact, extraordinary.

In her own words, Ikuko describes her work as ‘the vehicle to make visible an invisible, microscopic world. A world of intricacy and detail, of mathematical pattern and organic chaos, of beauty and repulsion.’
