The London Design Festival is the highlight of the UK design calendar, where the world gathers to celebrate great craft and design. This year, Etsy makes its mark with a selling exhibition of cross-disciplinary contemporary craft on 24-27th September 2015, in partnership with Crafts Council and Tent London.

Etsy in the UK: Four Corners of Craft is a maker development and exhibition project supported by arts and craft organisations in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.

From Inverness to Sussex and Belfast to Cardigan, the Etsy community is a highly talented group of designer-makers, creating beautiful contemporary craft across all areas of the UK. Selected from almost 1000 applications, we will unite 45 of these makers in an exhibition to represent craft from the four corners of our country… what ties it all together is the quality of making.

You can meet these makers and see their work in person at  Four Corners of Craft in September. In the meantime, here’s a look behind the scenes of the Scottish sellers working in their studios from all over Scotland.

Heather McDermott

Having studied at Edinburgh College of Art, Heather moved home to the Isle of Skye to pursue her love of jewellery and establish her own business. She specialises in contemporary jewellery and takes her inspiration from the ever-changing shoreline and landscape of Skye. Unconventional in size and structure, each piece is an expression of sculptural form and is designed to create a statement. The industrial nature of the stainless steel is hand formed into soft geometric shapes mimicking fishing nets and lobster pots.

‘Etsy is such a great platform to be seen on internationally and it felt like the next step for my business as I am based in such a rural and remote location.’

Juli Bolaños-Durman

Juli Bolaños-Durman

Born in Costa Rica, Juli is now based in Edinburgh, Scotland. With a background in Graphic Design, Mixed Media and Glass, her fresh outlook and variety of experiences enhance her creative process. Using blown and found glass, she embellishes her work with intricate engravings to become a one of a kind piece of art. Mesmerised by the extraordinary rhythmic patterns found in nature and architectural cityscapes, Juli transforms ordinary objects into precious pieces that convey a unique story.

‘I first heard of Etsy when my sister started to sell her very own jewellery. When I heard of the opportunity to apply for the Four Corners of Craft Etsy Exhibition, I jumped straight to the chance and called my sister for advice on how to set up my own shop!’

Vanessa Bullick

Living in the small fishing village of Cellardyke in East Neuk of Fife, Vanessa divides her time between family life with her two young sons and creating beautiful sawdust fired ceramics pots in her home pottery studio. Throwing herself into the world of ceramics back in 1995, Vanessa began to teach herself the basics and bought her very first wheel and kiln. Moving on to study Sculpture at Edinburgh College of Art, Vanessa has since been awarded Professional membership of the Craft Potters Association in London and now exhibits widely around the UK in galleries.

‘Etsy has made a huge difference to me in helping me to run my business from home – I can now communicate with customers all around the world. Etsy has been very important and exciting part of my development.’
