What’s in our holiday bag: Beach, festival and city break essentials

Whether you’re strolling the tree-lined boulevards of Paris, dancing carefree in a muddy field, or collecting shells along the beach; there are always a handful of nifty items that you never fail to take with you. Here are the handmade and vintage things at the top of our ‘to pack’ list…

What's in our holiday bag? City Edition

1. Peppermint lip balm, £4, Ravens Ct Apothecary | 2. Suede fringe keyring, £4, Suede and Co | 3. Leather backpack, £195, Woodwards Leather | 4. Cat eye sunglasses, £10, She Vamps | 5. Leather journal, £19, Jackdaw Bindery

A sturdy but stylish backpack is ideal for the hustle and bustle of a city getaway; from securely fastened pockets, you can whip out the chic travel diary and scribble down memories, recipes and doodles while on the tube. A pop of colour in the form of a suede tassel keyring is useful for quickly identifying your bag, or attaching to hotel keys. Nobody wants chapped lips in their holiday snaps, so stay camera-ready with a peppermint chapstick. Cat eye sunglasses add retro pezzazz, keep your peepers safe from rays, and disguise the signs of having acquainted yourself with the local bars during the previous night.

What's in our holiday bag? Festival edition

1. Fruit sunglasses, £36, We Are Spangled | 2. Rainbow glitter purse, £15, Luna on the Moon | 3. Indian messenger bag, £35, Ruby Sparrow Design | 4. Mandala compact mirror, £8, Holly Watts Design | 5. Silver scrunchie, £2.50, Hanas Designs

Festival essentials aren’t festival essentials unless they’re sparkly, colourful and covered in tassels. Case in point: this hand-embroidered messenger bag made from recycled Indian fabrics. Keep your money safe in a sparkly purse, apply oodles of glitter with the help of a mandala-patterned pocket mirror, and when your hair gets unmanageable, tie it back with a metallic scrunchie. Face wipes, wellies and bottled water are obviously pretty important, but let’s not underestimate the benefit of packing a kitsch and bedazzled pair of sunnies.

Whats in my holiday bag? Beach edition

1. Palm trees notebook, £6, Nikki Strange | 2. Fish purse, £20, Jenny Sibthorp | 3. Orange deckchair beach bag, £20, Wyatt and Jack | 4. Orange striped towel, £16, My Luxe | 5. Vintage ombre Lennon sunglasses, £12, Bird on a Wire Vintage

You’ll never be too far from a deckchair, even if you lose the morning race for reclinable seating, as this beach bag is upcycled from deckchair canvas foraged along the UK’s south coast. Easily washable and, most vitally, containing what seems like limitless space for every seaside essential (such as a tropical notebook for keeping track of what a fabulous time you’re having). Ice cream money is always easily accessible thanks to the nautical-themed coin purse, and what may be a humble towel back home, transforms into a super versatile shawl-sarong-towel wonder at the beach. Not only do orange and red tinted sunnies create a bold beach babe look, they make everything appear extra sun-kissed.
