Manmade is nearly upon us, guys and gals! Before the event on 12th and 13th June, four of the 50 creative fellas who’ll be selling handmade goodies have opened the doors to their studios so we can have a nose around.
James Ward | Jimbob Art
James creates a range of ceramics and illustrations centring on his expressive animal drawings.
As well as successful Etsy shop, James has a brick-and-mortar shop and studio on Columbia Road, where he continues to draw all his work himself, by hand.
“Since I was little I always loved drawing animals, and I continued to draw during my studies. Now I’m self-employed drawing animals!”
Sam Wingate | Mr Wingate
Drawing and hand printing are important aspects of Sam’s work, and he’s keen to share his skills with others.
At Manmade, Sam will be giving a drop-in workshop on how to design and screen print your own tote bag.
‘As a man who makes things, I have always been aware of quite how few of us are out there making and selling in comparison to our female counterparts.’
“I want to dispel the myth that craft and making is just for girls.”
Daniel Darby | Daniel Darby Jewellery
“Making a piece of jewellery for the first time is my favourite part of the process. Seeing the finished outcome sitting on my workbench gives me a great sense of achievement.”
“The Jewellery industry is full of men and I know loads of guys who are creative and make things.”
“They just don’t see what they do as craft or see themselves fitting in a craft fair environment. Which is why Manmade is going to be really interesting as is a fun way to challenge those ideas.”
“Crafts definitely not just for girls, it’s all about getting your hands dirty!”
Zack McLaughlin
Zack Mclaughlin is a wire, paper and wood sculptor of birds for interior spaces.
His love of the natural world has lead him to recreate nature for the home whilst leaving the true beauty out there continuing to grow and inspire.
At Manmade, Zack will be teaching a workshop (Friday 12th 2-4pm) in which you can learn to make your own wire bird (pictured above). Book here.
For the young ‘uns, there’ll be a workshop on Saturday that swaps wire for pipe cleaners. Book here.
If you’re inspired to make, you can open an Etsy shop and get started with 20 free listings! Enter the code: MANMADE here (new sellers only).

I find the concept of an event that is specifically designed to exclude females very offensive and toxic. Organizing events that are meant to feature a particular demographic should not be used to feature a dominant and oppressive group and exclude the one that is more often over-looked (women in the manufacturing process).
