Calling all male makers: Apply to sell at Manmade

Feb 27, 2015

Are you a man who makes? Apply to sell your work at Manmade – an event to celebrate ‘men who make’ brought to you by Etsy, Crafty Fox Market and Mr Wingate.

Just in time for Father’s Day on 12-13th June 2015, Manmade will include a marketplace, visual art area, talks by inspirational designers, making workshops, craft demonstrations, bar, food, DJs and general merriment to celebrate creative men! And that’s where you come in…

‘As a man who makes things, I have always been aware of quite how few of us are out there making and selling in comparison to our female counterparts.’ (Etsy seller, Sam Wingate of Mr Wingate).

Since the women selling on Etsy far outnumber the men, we’ve decided it’s time to show off our boys! Apply to sell your craft products or visual art at the Manmade event and join the likes of printmaker Sam, illustrator and product designer Jimbob Art, jeweller Rodology and sculptor Zack Mclaughlin.

Read more about the event here and the application instructions below.

Am I eligible to sell at Manmade?

Spaces are limited but we’re looking to select male sellers who make craft / design products or visual art. To be eligible, you must:

• Have an active Etsy shop (haven’t opened your shop yet? Don’t worry! You can get 20 FREE listings when you open your shop for this event. See details below…)
• Be a male designer-maker or artist.
• Be based in the United Kingdom
• Be over 18 years of age
• Be available to sell your work in person in London on Friday 12 June (12-9pm) and Saturday 13 June (11am-8pm). As well as set up on Friday morning and take down on Saturday evening.
• Read and agree to full guidelines, as detailed in the application form (see below).
• Please note – There is a participation fee for this opportunity, payable to Crafty Fox Market (depending on display space, fees range from £100 to £160).

If you’re not eligible this time, never fear! We have many more showcasing opportunities coming up this year, so watch out for open calls via the Etsy UK blog and sign up for the Etsy Success newsletter.

Will people be able to buy my work at Manmade?

Yes! Selected sellers will be present at the event, ‘manning’ their displays and selling their work to the public.

Deadline for applications

Applications must be received by midnight on Thursday 19 March 2015.

I don’t have an Etsy shop yet. Can I still apply?

If you’re eligible for Manmade and don’t currently sell on Etsy, you can open a shop in order to apply. Get started with 20 free listings! Enter the code: MANMADE here (new sellers only).

When will I know if I have been selected?

The Manmade sellers will be selected by Etsy, Crafty Fox Market, Mr Wingate, David Nicholls (formerly Telegraph Magazine’s design editor and menswear columnist, now features editor at House and Garden) and a panel of industry experts – check back for an update soon! Crafty Fox will notify you of the the result of your application via email within one month of the application deadline. Once you have applied we may ask you questions about your work via convo, so please keep an eye out for us.

Hi Jonathan! Thanks for getting in touch. All men who make are eligible to apply for Manmade (as long as you meet the guidelines detailed above). Your products don't need to be aimed at a male audience - they can be for women, men or unisex. Good luck with your application if you decide to go ahead with it! :)

Thank you all for your interest in our Open Call for Manmade.

I just wanted to respond to your comments regarding the cost of the event -

Lots of Etsy sellers benefit from in-person selling events alongside their online sales. But, of course, this absolutely depends on individual sellers assessing their own situation to ensure they make the best decision for their business.

Crafty Fox Markets offer really great value in-person selling opportunities and we're delighted to partner with them on Manmade to support the Etsy community in this way. The show is open for 2 full days (18 hours of public exposure) with an expected 2000 shoppers per day. There is no fee to apply and the fee to participate has been kept as low as possible by Crafty Fox - makers are at the heart of all they do (just like Etsy!). This participation fee also includes a listing on the Crafty Fox website which drives increased traffic to sellers' shops both before and after the market.

Manmade will be widely promoted to a targeted audience of shoppers and press. Crafty Fox Markets are well established in the UK craft scene, with a loyal following of buying audiences and makers alike. Not to mention the marketing reach of Etsy UK, with our popular social media channels and dedicated PR & Comms team on hand to promote the event.

As well as giving Etsy sellers a promotional platform, Manmade will offer a chance to sell directly to thousands of design-hungry visitors. As with all Etsy and Crafty Fox events, Manmade will be carefully curated so sellers can be confident that they will be selling in good company!

If this open call is not for you, we welcome you to apply for future opportunities and will always share via the Etsy UK blog, social media channels and Etsy Success newsletter, which you can subscribe to here: https://www.etsy.com/emails/success

Wishing you all the best with your application if you choose to apply! :) Sarah

Great idea! Might not be able to make it to London, but thanks for plugging the male makers, we do feel a bit outnumbered!

Being a maker and writer I've felt for a long time men are a bit on the back foot and marginalised in social media marketing. (My satirical novel 'Kill all Men' was actually banned by Facebook as as being too anti-feminist! :/) This is a brilliant idea - we need it.. well done. I'll certainly be applying.

Fabulous Idea. The men do get overlooked and it's time for them to shine bright. I for one am looking forward to seeing there work. x

l like the idea as ETSY is just not well known in the UK at all. There is an overwhelming case for a long overdue national ad campaign in support of all your UK Sellers. l was quite interested till l got to the fees you mention. To be honest it would not be cost effective at that price.

I make things mainly in wood. It's a great idea but just a bit too far away for me. Many people I have spoken to, have never even heard of Etsy. Hopefully, events like this will help. Just watched the ad on Youtube . Good ad.

Would have loved to apply for this but sadly its a bit outside my price range to be able to attend. Will keep listing my stuff on etsy though and keep an eye out for more events like this. Good luck to all who enter!

Such a shame this event is in London. Otherwise it would be a great opportunity. If only we could supply products for the event without having to be there. (Paul - the designer and creator of Finch Cards, my wife manages the shop)

This sounds fantastic. It is a shame that it is London based. We need more of this in the Midlands or North. But sounds very exciting.

Sounds really interesting. I recently done a Christmas show there (if it is the Brick lane building) I done really well but that was Christmas but I am sure June is a great time too as it is so busy this time of year as well. So, I am in assuming I fit the criteria.. better go and have a ganda at wot the rules for application are.

Sounds like a nice idea, but why charge the sellers a fee if it's an event set up to promote Etsy? It may not seem like a lot to a huge company, but a few hundred quid in fees, stock, displays & insurance is a lot for most people to gamble, especially if you're not a well established seller already.

Looks a great idea. Might not be able to make the trip from Wales. Travel and accommodation costs a big concern to small trading craftsman. Perhaps if this works well in London Cardiff might be considered for another event.

Hi Sarah, I'd love to do this but unfortunately our baby is due a couple of weeks before the fair, so I might not be a very popular Dad if I disappeared for a weekend so soon after the birth! Please can you keep me informed if you do any others, ideally Christmas would be ideal. Many thanks, Ivan

This could be a potentially silly question, But if I was lucky enough to get a stall there I would most likely have a friend come a long to help, who would be female. Would this be a problem?

  • SarahHewettUK Admin

Sarah Hewett from SarahHewettUK said 2 years ago

Hi Thomas! Thanks for getting in touch. Not a silly question at all! Yes, of course your female friend would be most welcome to join you and help out. The idea for Manmade is that products are designed and made by men, but there will be lots of women in attendance at the event. Best of luck with your application! :)
