While there are still plenty of UK festivals left to don your glad-rags for, Bestival is the biggie where full-on fancy dress is concerned.
With entertainment everywhere at Bestival, from open-air dance floors and wooded amphitheatres to Big Tops and Bollywood tents, the magical Isle of Wight event is famous for getting festival-goers to dip into their dressing up boxes with a different, colourful fancy dress theme each year.
And the theme for Bestival 2014 is a pretty good one: Desert Island Disco! Attendees are encouraged to dress accordingly and in the words of festival founder Rob da Bank: “Palm trees, grass skirts and mirrorballs are the order of the day. It truly is gonna be the Bestival yet!”
Inspired, we thought we’d see what we could find from European Etsy sellers (so it arrives in time, yeah?) to fit the fancy dress theme…
Starting from the top, it only seems right to have a disco ball perched jauntily on your head. This fabulous fascinator is handmade in Wales, and will lend
Note: We wanted to include this AMAZING handmade disco ball bustier but alas, it ships within the US only. But sadly only yours if you have friends Stateside. Shame.
Alternatively, if glittering globes ain’t your thang, this mermaidy headband (handmade rather aptly in High barnet, LOL!) will add a touch of the aquatic in the prettiest way possible.
Go slightly GaGa-esque with this holographic one-piece, which has a sort of swimsuit vibe to it too, thus ticking the ‘desert island’ box nicely we think (although might cause potential Port-A-Loo problems…).
Dance to a tribal beat on your desert island with funky African print co-ords, handmade with love by Lissa and Bo in London.
When we think ‘desert island’, we think ‘under the sea’ which, naturally, makes us think Little Mermaid. Which is why these pearlescent sunglasses, customised by hand in London, are just IDEAL.
This chunky cuff, handmade in Turkey from ‘mazing metallic leather, is the perfect hybrid of tribal and disco – and so nice, you’ll want to wear it post festival, too.
Go for beachcomber chic with this stylish seashell pendant, complete with gemstone moons, for that ‘I just washed up from the sea’ look. Damp, tangly hair optional.
If you want to add a touch of the tropical in a more subtle way, this punchy pineapple necklace, handmade from leather in London, is perfect.
It wouldn’t be a Desert Island Disco without a Hawaiian shirt making an appearance, right? We love the more muted tones on this one – and it’s a total steal, too.
And if the sun’s shining, go one step further with this vintage one-piece; just add sawn-off denim shorts and an exotically coloured cocktail and you’re set!
Of course, if you’re feeling crafty (that’ll be most of you, then), you can festoon your own ensemble from scratch. How about Robinson Crusoe Does Disco? Or Lord of the Looking Real Fly?
