Every day between December 1st and December 25th, we bring you a new festive ‘how to’ as part of our DIY Advent series.
Ricarda from the blog 23qm Stil writes about style, design, interiors, furniture and accessories, special places and locations – everything that embellishes your home. She travels a lot and loves it; she’s always looking for beautiful shops and special accessories to bring back from her trips. Ricarda lives with her family in the suburbs of Cologne, Germany in an old house that was built in 1918 – she says, “there is always something to do here besides blogging!”
How is Etsy a place where one of a kind gifts come from for you?
You can find great design and beautiful things from all around the world on Etsy; so it’s very easy to find a special gift, for your husband, your mother-in-law or your best friend. Last year I participated in the campaign “A gift less ordinary” and even found a great present for architect Egon Eiermann – Etsy offers myriads of great possibilities.
What is your favorite handmade Christmas present?
As I know a lot of creative bloggers, I’ve received some great handmade presents. I really love prints, stamps and gifts from the kitchen, as I like to give gift like these myself. Last year I got a blood orange syrup with cinnamon – with champagne it’s really a great alternative to Aperol Spritz.
Do you have any rituals that you do regularly every Christmas?
It is really important to me that Christmas is really calm and peaceful. That’s why most years we spend Christmas day at home, have a nice long breakfast, read a lot, watch Christmas movies and have a delicious dinner, usually it’s cheese fondue because you can sit together for a long time.
Black & White Table Decor with ‘Christmas-in-a-Jar’.
You will need:
- Dishes, cutlery, glasses
- White spruce (Picea glauca var. albertiana) in a matching pot
- Candle sticks i.e. from Frau Sieben
- Decorative mini fir trees from the building center or craft shop
- 4 small glass jars
- Dried oranges
- Dried apples
- Star anise
- Cinnamon sticks
- Copper yarn
Set the table, add the spruce, the candlesticks and the firs.
Put black tissue paper or napkins on the plates. To make my “Christmas in a jar”, fill the glass jam jars with the dried oranges, apples, pimento peppers, cinnamon sticks, cloves and aniseed and close the lid.
Embellish the jars by winding copper yarn around the lids, and attach a luggage tag with a sweet message written on it.
The spicy mixture is especially aromatic when you pour hot water into the jars. Mmmmm!
