During the month of July, members of Brighton Sellers’ Team, British Crafters and Makerhood worked together to improve their Etsy shops. It was an intense month of mentoring one another and making improvements, but the results have been inspiring!
The month started off with mentors and mentees getting matched up by their Team leaders and then going through a shop critique. Amiee from HandmadeandHeritage says “I think the critique was my favourite, and it was the most rewarding part of this programme as we both noticed small details that could easily be changed and made a huge difference in how our shops are presented.”
After the critique, each pair set a few goals to accomplish during the month. These ranged from expanding product lines to improving tags and titles. Mooshpie retook her photos in her backyard shed studio; the results are beautiful!
Some people used the month to start a new shop. Kim from Flextiles said, “I’ve thought about setting up an Etsy shop for ages but was daunted by the amount of work that seemed to be involved – taking good photos, getting decent packaging, finding out postage rates… So Mentoring Month provided the kick up the behind to actually do something about it – working with a partner who I didn’t want to let down and who provided support and encouragement was really helpful. I know that, left to my own devices, I would still be shopless!”
Several experienced sellers also participated as mentees. Jackie from ForeverFoxed mentored Becky from BeckyQueenofFrocks but was also mentored by Kelly from FabFunky. Jackie noted, “I think I had grown a bit complacent about my shop but weekly meetings with Kelly soon sorted me out. She is very generous in sharing her knowledge which has made her shops and business so successful so quickly. Her expertise in SEO and the advice she provided has been a revelation. With her help I reached my goal of 1000 sales and she has given me the tools to improve and take my shop to a new level.”
Mentoring a less experienced seller is a rewarding way to make connections in the community. Sarah from Dollydripp was paired with Hannah from MirthsBubble who made her first sale thanks to Sarah’s advice. “To hear that she’s now had her first sale in a few months has made me so proud!”
Mentors also found the experience of helping others led them to improving their own shops. Sarah Meredith from Rockcakes says, “I have loved helping. It has given me a massive kick! I reworked all of my wedding rings and sold one within a week of making changes.”
To celebrate all the hard work the sellers have been doing, the three teams are holding special events. The Brighton Seller’s team will be having an end of month party at Super+Super – a creative hub for you to work, learn, and share in the heart of Brighton. They hold regular classes like crochet, screen printing and macramé as well as free events like a monthly ‘Crafty Social’ and film club, so the Brighton Seller’s Team will fit right in!
The British Crafters team will be having a sale. Please use the discount code MENTORMONTH in any of the shops featured in this treasury for a 15% discount on your order.
Makerhood and the Brighton Seller’s Team are also having a sale. You can find their sale items here. Just enter the coupon code MMSALE for a 10% discount. Their sale will run from 1st Aug to 14th Aug.
