Shop Locally for Neighbouring Talent

Mar 24, 2013

by Susannah Bradley handmade and vintage goods

Hello, Neighbour!

Etsy is a global marketplace, but thousands of those items are made and sold right around the corner from you. “For hundreds of years British arts and crafts have inspired people around the world, and contemporary crafts are no exception. Whether traditional or contemporary, UK crafts have always been known for their excellence and unique style. And some of the best of those crafts can be found here on Etsy!” says Ilene from Corydora.

With great talent next door, it makes loads of sense to buy within the UK. “Shopping local means you get your items quicker, and can be more environmentally friendly than having something posted halfway round the world to you. But more than that, you are supporting crafters in your local area, and helping them to have a better life and to grow their business,” says Alice from TheSequinnedSheep.

With these thoughts in mind, a group of sellers in the UK have banded together to put on a special sale. Etsy’s UK & Ireland Promo Team is running a sale during the month of March to offer free P&P within the UK.

Use the coupon code FREEMARCH13 in any participating shops for free P&P within the UK.

Check out some of the items here!

UK and Irish sellers, want to join the sale?

Stefania from Djemiladesign says, “When I applied to this team, I knew I was applying to a community of people like me ready to promote others and being promoted. Also, as an inexperienced seller it is great to find the support and advice of more mature sellers.”

Very cool! Sometime you see really nice stuff but the postage makes the price too high, especially internationally. Although this is a local initiative, it is a great idea nevertheless. Discouraged by high postage in some Etsy shops, I made all my items free shipping worldwide a few months ago. Of course I had to figure the mailing costs into the price, but at least the price is what you see with no extras.

A very cool idea! Sometime the high shipping cost simple makes things too expensive, especially when buying internationally. Although this is a local initiative it is very nice nevertheless. I just wish I was living in the UK or Ireland! I actually changed all the items in my shop to free worldwide shipping a few months ago, because I was discouraged seeing cool stuff for reasonable price but postage being too high to consider ordering. Of course I had to figure the price of shipping into my prices, but at least the customer sees right away what the price is with no extras added.

Sorry about the double entry -- it looked like the first one did not enter, so I rewrote it. Sorry!!

This looks great, but I'm confused –– I'm in Ireland, and it looks like this sale applies to people in the UK only. I know the lingo can be confusing, but the UK is the bigger of the two islands plus Northern Ireland. Ireland – most of the smaller island – is an independent country (with international postal rates from the UK, of course). I'm not offended, but this really should be cleared up, because mistakes like this do offend many on the island of Ireland. We're not in the UK (wars were fought), we don't shop within the UK and Irish craft aren't UK crafts, etc. You get the idea :) So, does the sale offer free postage to Ireland? Thanks!

This is a fantastic idea! I think it's very important for UK sellers to support one another and shop locally. It's easy to be overwhelmed by the number of Etsy sellers in the USA and forget that this is a global marketplace, and that we have plenty of talented makers and artists in this country too. I'm always excited to discover sellers from my local area, it makes me feel part of a creative community, which is very inspiring.

Cool! Works for the US too, state by state.

Virpi Irene Bendandi: good idea on the free shipping. I live in Milan and will consider that for my New York/US (prior residence) customers.

Lovely blog post and great exposure for the team :-D

Thanks for this great post! I agree with Miki that it's very easy to be overwhelmed by the number of US sellers on Etsy, and that means it's also easy for us non-US sellers to be overlooked by potential buyers everywhere :) There's some fabulous shops taking part in this promotion!

Great to see shops working together. More teams should do this. You find such wonderful artisans when you buy local.

I support and find it nice when people work together to help each other...Kudos to you!

I don't think the sale applies to Irish buyers; for example mine is set to only "Domestic" shipping which I assume is UK only (which, as you say, includes Northern Ireland). However as Louise says the team includes both UK and Irish sellers. The team is not just for this particular promotion so I expect in future other promotions will be easier to implement by both countries. I'm not sure if any Irish sellers are doing this particular promotion.

Just seen this - great blog post!! I am part of the team and I love it. With the postage prices rising yet again it really is important to shop local!! Hopefully we can really build the number of UK sellers!!
