Here at Etsy, we believe that the story behind an object is often just as fascinating as the object itself. Short Stories is our series dedicated to telling the tales behind extraordinary pieces found or created by Etsy sellers.
When we saw Caitlin Hinshelwood’s tear hankies, we were intrigued. Were they for tears of sadness or tears of joy? Here’s Caitlin.
I’ve naturally followed a life in art from a really young age. Many of my early memories are of drawing or making things. My work has always been illustrative, and I have always been interested in storytelling within my work.

The looping cursive text reads: “Dry your tears here.”

Framing a field of teardrops, the motto “dry those tears” repeats.

I am a big fan of the handkerchiefs of Tammis Keefe and admire her use of colour and design within the confines of a simple square. I’d been looking at mid-century hankies which carried messages — some practical, some humorous, some sentimental — and liked the idea of making something special, perhaps commemorative that could be a token of comfort and friendship.  The messages on my tear hankies are meant to be words of encouragement.

Love love this story! I've been collecting 50s designer hankies for years and Tammis is one of my personal favs as well! Love to see a modern day hankie, yay!

These are so sweet. My mother always had a silk handkerchief with her and it always had such a colorful design on it. I always found it a comforting juxtaposition that the design on an object so often used for sad tears was always so cheerfully decorated. Blessings,

Oooo wonderful! I love the ideas and the art on the hankies!

As a hanky maker and lover I enjoyed reading this article very much! Hankies are a way of saying so many things, from tears of joy to tears of sorrow, from "I love you" to "I'll always be here to support you". They are beautiful, meaningful and eco-friendly. You cannot ask more of a petite square of fabric.

    Such a cute idea! Lovely!

  • dizhasneatstuff said 6 years ago

These are beautiful! I carry a hankie with me everyday.( haven't bought a box of kleenex in 4 years). These are much too nice to blow your nose on.

Memories of my grandmother came flooding back along with these beautiful tear hankies~ It was just another one of those things about that great generation that separated it from my own, but that I wonder may be seeping into our own time like so many other wonderful old things here~

  • MTmaiden said 6 years ago

I absolutely love hankerchiefs. I scour used and antigue stores to find them! Down with Kleenix, long live the hankie. I do have to say, these are almost too beautiful to use and every once and a while i will come across ones that I cannot use cause they are gorgeous. But old linen, cotton? So soft....puffs smufffs

  • LivingVintage said 6 years ago

    Interesting!

Kleenex has a place in my home, don't want to handle and wash hankies with all that "stuff" when one has a cold. A lovely hanky tucked into a purse or pocket for an occasional sniffle or tears is another thing.

  • PoshBinky said 6 years ago

    Lovely hankies! They are gorgeous!

  • mlezcano said 6 years ago

Aww, they are so adorable they almost break my heart- but in a good way. A great gift idea for a friend going through love woes, or any type of woes for that matter.

  • WellRavelled said 6 years ago

Those are so beautiful! What a sweet gift idea.

  • Plastidermy said 6 years ago

Sometimes I need a good cry, not out of sadness, but because it just feels good to cry sometimes. I could use one these for those cries. Uber cute.

  • fineartstoneware said 6 years ago

    Beautiful.

  • mazedasastoat said 6 years ago

Back in the day, when a friend would break up with her man, I'd generally turn up with weepy movies to watch, a family-sized bar of chocolate & a box of tissues. It strikes me that the modern long distance equivalent would be a DVD & one of these beaitiful hankies... a thoughtful gift that says it's OK to cry & you're not alone.

  • haruaki said 6 years ago

What a fantastic idea! Handkerchiefs are still very much used here in Japan, though I have yet to see anyone cry into one. The idea of cry your tears here seems so Cary Grant. Very romantic.

  • StayArtisan said 6 years ago

    Great

  • DewyMorningVintage said 6 years ago

  • hasincla said 6 years ago

Hankerchiefs: functional and beautiful. I like it!

  • voXevangeline said 6 years ago

i used to work for crate and barrel and crafters would come in to purchase our linens to frame for their kitchens. these are even more beautiful and would look great in a frame. Xo!

  • shkurinskaya85 said 6 years ago

I agree with Mary Lezcano. I might get one for myself. I'm a big cry baby!

  • GourmetHandbags said 6 years ago

Bringing back the hankies! It makes me think of those old comedy shows where someone politely lets a person borrow their hanky and after the person snots all over it they hand it back to them. Lol! Their hankies weren't nearly as pretty as these or I'm sure they wouldn't have offered to share them in the first place.

  • ToodlesToTheNoodles said 6 years ago

I love your hankies. I collect hankies as well as hand embroider my home made linen hankies.

I love your hankies! This brings memories on my childhood. I've had few with smurf motifs, flowers and lacy edges :) I like yours with teardrops the most, kind of feeling I need that one today..
