Over the past 11 years, Etsy’s business has continued to grow and expand as we support our vibrant community and pursue our long-term mission of reimagining commerce. Etsy’s Board of Directors plays a key role in supporting the growth and evolution of the company, and their counsel and oversight helps guide us as we achieve new milestones and seize new growth opportunities. Today, I’m excited to announce that we have added new talent and expertise with the appointment of Josh Silverman as our newest independent director.

Josh joins the Board with a wealth of executive experience and much of his career has focused on building consumer technology companies that connect people around the world. He also has deep experience scaling and driving growth within global marketplaces. This unique combination of commerce and technology expertise, along with his passion and enthusiasm for Etsy’s mission, make him a great addition to the Board.

When building a board, it is incredibly useful to have people on the team who have prior CEO experience and complement the skills and experience of the other members of the board. As I’ve gotten to know Josh in the process leading up to his appointment, his unique skillset and leadership insights have already been helpful to me. I know his experience will be particularly valuable as we continue to build and scale Etsy around the world.

Josh shared a few words about his appointment: “I’m thrilled to join a company that has a great brand, powerful mission, loyal community, and passionate employees. Etsy is unique in so many ways, from its commitment to empowering creative entrepreneurs to its personalized shopping experience to its leading-edge technology capabilities. I believe that each of these characteristics will help Etsy continue to grow and thrive over the long term. I’m incredibly excited about Etsy’s future and I look forward to working with the rest of the Board and entire Etsy team to reshape the face of commerce.”

Josh most recently served as President of American Express’ US Consumer Business where he was responsible for launching new products, broadening the appeal of the brand, and building out product and technology capabilities. He served as CEO of Skype from 2008 to 2010, a time in which the company added more than 300 million users. Through his leadership positions at eBay (CEO of eBay’s Shopping.com, CEO of eBay Netherlands, and General Manager of International Expansion), Josh led global teams, helped deliver strong financial growth, and was responsible for numerous strategic acquisitions that expanded overall reach. He also co-founded and served as CEO of Evite. Recently, Josh joined the Board of Directors at Shake Shack.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Josh has demonstrated a deep commitment to community and civic engagement, which is important to us at Etsy. He currently serves as the Chair of ScriptEd.org, a member of the Stanford Business School Management Board and a member of the Lincoln Center Theater Board.

I’m excited to welcome Josh to the Etsy family and look forward to his contributions and perspective. I’m also extremely proud that Etsy continues to attract world-class talent at both the Board and company level, which I know will help drive our long-term success. I’m looking forward to working with Josh and the other directors on our Board as we continue to execute on our growth strategy, build for the long term, and deliver value to all of the stakeholders in our community, including our shareholders.
