Etsy Gives Back in Thanks

Dec 2, 2014

by Chad Dickerson handmade and vintage goods

Today we’re participating in a global day for giving back: Giving Tuesday. Giving Tuesday is a movement designed to shine a light on the holiday spirit of generosity.

Etsy is a powerful community, working to bring heart to commerce and instill craftsmanship and connection in the goods we make and buy. We’re honoring this community, one that continuously gives us the inspiration and motivation to do and make things we love.

In celebration of Giving Tuesday and our inspiring community, we’re donating $100,000 to be equally divided among four impressive organizations: Women for Women International, Room to Read, Direct Relief and the Nature Conservancy.

We selected these nonprofits for their exceptional work in four important areas: education, disaster relief, women’s empowerment and environmental protection. Perhaps more importantly, we selected each for their demonstrated transparency and operational efficiency, and an approach to philanthropy that genuinely aligns with the needs of those who receive their services.

Each organization operates internationally and shares our philosophy of providing local services on a global scale. Learn more about what they’re doing and contribute to their amazing work at

Giving comes in many forms. There are lots of ways you can contribute today through generosity of time, money, compassion and kindness. No matter how you choose to give, you can help us spread the word and encourage your own networks to get involved. With your support, we can show our collective power as a community.

Getting Involved on Giving Tuesday

Make a donation on our fundraising page or to a different organization you support.

Volunteer with an organization in your local community or share your unique skills through pro-bono work — platforms like Catchafire can help you find opportunities. Food banks and soup kitchens are typically in need of extra help during the holiday season, or think about visiting a community center where an extra smile can go a long way.

Involve your community and inspire them to spread the love
Join the more than two billion people who participated in Giving Tuesday last year. Tell us how you give on Instagram or Twitter with the tags @etsy and #givingtuesday.

This is a great contribution by Etsy. In support of Decembeard (campaign in England where men try to grow beards to raise awareness of bowel cancer) I am giving 50% of proceeds from sales of my beard range of cards through December to the charity Bowel Cancer UK.

Awesome! So happy to hear this. I love Room to Read and what they have been doing since... 2009 when I learned of John Wood and RtR. also, my older sister works with them! I'm nerding out over this news. Very much a supporter of empowering women, as I volunteered the past two years with an organization out of NYC helping women from DV situations feel they have the right lifeskill-tools and providing them with an opportunity to feel it's okay to be beautiful again. It's just lovely to see my favorite online design and tech company continue to giveback and help more than the folks they help daily on Etsy. ❤️ Beautiful news! Okay, nerd-out.

I have been volunteering in my community for over 30 years as a public service. We educate on the hope for the future from the bible. We also assist when disaster's occur in the community worldwide through donations you can view all of what we are a part of on under newsroom We assisted families in The recent mudslide in Hiroshima, Refugees in Ukraine and more!

I remembered we also helped set up hand washing stations for Ebola in Africa. And, we buy from Trades of Hope that help women get out of poverty and sex slave trade around the world and here in U.S.A.

Thank you, Etsy, for reminding us that this time of year in particular should be a time of Giving...but we must remember that it is important to take that Giving spirit into the New Year as well!

In our community we have a toonie draw that has generated almost 2 million dollars in 144 week! We are so proud of what we have been able to do with the money for example Every school program in our area is funded, our food banks, Meals on Wheels, High School Band Equipment...the list goes on and on. Like Etsy we feel we are all part of One World. Together, helping each other we are all stronger:) Thanks Etsy. What a great leader! JazzbydesignCharms

Happy Holidays! There are so many people that are much less fortunate than us. I am very happy to belong to an organization that is finding awesome ways to give back. On a personal basis, its good to remember that we can all help out every single day---just by the conscious choices we make in living.

Just signed up for Etsy as a buyer. I am a Christian writer and photo journalist. I think it is wonderful that Etsy promotes a community of service. I do a lot of pro bono work and volunteer once a week at our local hospital. It's good to know that Etsy uses the internet in such a positive and productive way. God bless!

Thank you for this information. It is nice to see Etsy involved in charitable work, and helping those makers under the Etsy 'umbrella' to get involved. It is important for us to remember our sense of community outside of Etsy as we grow.
