Would be interesting actually comparing apples to apples... Vintage Volume TY vs LY (this year results compared to last year. Handmade Volume TY vs LY Supplies Volume TY vs LY This is normal operating procedure for all Retail Business, let's take a page from their playbook! We then can look at our issues and develop a plan.

  • Rt9NJvintageFun

candy donnelly from Rt9NJvintageFun said 3 years ago

Why don't we take this information a step further, compare TY vs LY. Vintage Volume for the month TY vs LY (this year vs last year) include YTD % up or down, ( year to date volume positive or negative) Handmade Volume TY vs LY, include YTD Supply Volume TY vs LY, include YTD As active Community we will be able to see our strengths and weaknesses and address programs to assist Etsy Sellers sales. This is a normal operating procedure in Retail Operations, let's take a page from their playbook, I guarantee this is a Winner for our Etsy Community.

    what GMS, and YOY?

  • FiddlestyxStudios

Martha Johnson from FiddlestyxStudios said 3 years ago

What is GMS and YOY? No abbreviations please! They only leave room for confusion.

  • EvesLittleEarthlings

Eve Geisler from EvesLittleEarthlings said 3 years ago

Agree with Martha! What do those initials mean? I tried to look them up, but there are many meanings.

  • Rt9NJvintageFun

candy donnelly from Rt9NJvintageFun said 3 years ago

I will be happy to explain,in the world of Retail Operations, these initials mean. TY.....this year sales LY.....last year sales MTD.....sales volume month to date Every Monday morning in all Retail Stores the managers review the sales volume for the previous week and look at why they had a great week or why they had a bad week and did not meet their sales goals. Latter on in the day there is a meeting with the next level of Management, could be Owners, District Mangers, Regional Managers and Executives and they again review the numbers from all over the country and discuss failures of some stores to make their sales volume and the success of stores who went way over their sales volume. They spot trends and discuss the new promotions that will be going into effect for the next few weeks, always keeping in mind what the public is spending their money on. If Etsy could give Shop owners the real numbers of Vintage Handmade Supplies we could all see a true picture of our business and these facts would be able to take us all to the next level. I would like to thank everyone who has sent me a convo discussing this concept. Wishing everyone a blockbuster Holiday Season!

Here's last Year's for comparison http://www.etsy.com/blog/news/2012/etsy-statistics-october-2012-weather-report/ Definitely a changing picture, overall positive for Etsy, but making it more difficult to be found! I've definitely found that I need to work a lot harder with photos and promotion to be found by buyers.

Seeing as how October is rolling into the Holiday shopping season to only see a small increase in sales month over month is kinda scary to me. I had expected to see a higher increase in revenues from Sept to October -- not 6.04%.

Interesting, I'd love to see the split by category: clothing, accessories, supplies, vintage, art... I great with growth between year 1 and 2, this year has been flat, and it would be interesting to see if that is a fine art/handmade trend, or if it is just me...

last time I heard the big box stores were only expecting a 3 to 4% increase over last year, and they are thinking that those numbers may be to high of a projection. So a 6 percent increase is good if you are doing that. I would be more concerned with same store sales increases over last year that would be the number that would tell us how the market is fairing for us. Question also is out of the 1.1 million new members what is the split between sellers and buyers, I became a member to become a seller? Anyways this site rocks thanks Etsy.

My brick and mortar store has been doing great as well since Mid october. My problem now is my Etsy store is low on inventory and as a result my views are going down and sales have slowed. We are all in this orbit together and because of the diverse Shops and items we sell, it helps bring a wider audience. Keep up the good work Etsy, we are all in this together and together we can be ground breaking great! This Thanksgiving, I am thankful to be in business with Etsy!

  • creativehistory

Creative History from CreativeHistory said 3 years ago

I agree with the calls for information on how many new members are actually new shops. If 1 million of those new members are buyers then that's great. But if the vast majority are new sellers then it's no wonder there's so many complaints about sales and views decreasing, we're trying to spread fewer and fewer buyers across more and more sellers.

Not enough detailed info. If there are so many new shoppers, then how come my views are down roughly 1000 a month since last year & my dollar sales are down by about 3-400 dollars? I suspect most of the joiners are sellers trying to tap into an already saturated market. Like many others here, I would like to see a category split to emphasise the difference between sellers who are one person operations & the ones who run or employ factories to make their goods. And don't even get me started on the continuing problem of the proliferation of resellers...

If the numbers are so good why are my sales so low? July and Aug were the best months for me. That is when I was in the Finds. This is the worst sales have ever been for my shop at the Holidays. The last government shut-down really hurt me. Maybe I will think about trying a new art pursuit. Cannot keep painting if it does not sell. I lose my desire to create. And painted rocks pile up everywhere! So time to try something new perhaps?

A 7.8% increase in the number of new items listed should, at the very least, result in a 7.8% increase in items sold. As far as the average Etsy seller is concerned, that would amount to treading water. It wouldn't be making a dent in the existing inventory, but it would at least mean that unsold goods weren't accumulating. As it stands these numbers show that new inventory again outpaced sales. Any increase in the total size of the pie is good news for Etsy. Unfortunately these numbers continue to show that the average seller's slice of that pie is diminishing. That's a shame!

At first glance and to new etsy members those numbers look impressive. With such little details about those numbers it's really just wasted space. This has been the worst year so far for my shop, down thousands of dollars a month. Some advertising (by Etsy) to bring in buyers would probably benifit the site instead of trying to get exsisting sellers into getting their friends and family to open up shops to earn a few free listings. We need buyers not more sellers. The site is turning into a flea market of mass produced garbage...so sad really.

While searching for knitted items tonight I found 5 identical sweaters being sold in five different shops all located in a large country to the south-west of Japan. Some of them with very healthy sales (one with over 400) and some of these shops have over 10 pages of sweaters listed. All handmade naturally. I got tired of flagging the same item so many times. Such shops used to be closed down long before they reached 400 sales. What has happened?

My views and sales are down 75%. Business has never been worse for me. Im more concerned about how many sales each seller is getting than the cumulative total of Etsy sales. It could be possible that while Etsy continues to grow in number of items and number of total sales, that each individual seller is selling less items.

I would like to see the numbers broken down into categories as well. My art shop opened 7 months ago with only a few sales.

YES! Categories would be a great addition to these statistics. It would be way more personally meaningful. Thanks!

Show me the "item viewed" to "order made" stats. Window shopping doesn't always equal to higher sales.

Unless these stats are broken down they mean nothing to us but etsy is getting bigger... Actually surprised they are still posted in this way. And why would I sign up a friend to sell on etsy to add to my competition just so that I make a few dollars in listing fees? Makes no sense to me!

Way to go Etsy, nice stats! I've been a member since 2009 and I love that you have not changed your pricing structure! And that you are alway making improvements, many of which are based on user input. Keep up the great work.

My shop is brand new but I hope to be included in those growing stats next year. I also would like to know how many actual shops, broken down by type, are on Etsy.

Shellsandmoreshellsmp was new to Etsy on December 1st and we have already sold two items. Etsy is a well-designed website. Thanks for making it possible to reach such a large customer base and offering such variety,

I guess when you are selling imported mass-produced necklaces for $5 at a huge profit, the numbers look good. For real handmade, this year has been abysmal.

This report is very helpful. If nothing else it shows that cybershopping has arrived. I join the chorus of other comments that more detail would be helpful. As a former brick and mortar retailer, I am used to tracking what inventory categories are doing better than others. Time period comparisons are helpful, too, TY LY. Etsy rightly encourages ramping up for seasonal, holiday sales. Planning for inventory happens months in advance. It takes a while to hand make items. So the more data the better. Thanks Admin for all your efforts in this direction.

I also became a member to become a seller, the up-side to buyers becoming members is that they have followers who will see my favoured items, a bit like word of mouth. I see Etsy as the way of the future, and if its meant to be the buyers will find your shop, just keep at it, never stop taking photos, researching, expanding you shop. Merry Xmas Etsy family And an Etsy New Year

On the Tonight Show with Jay Leno a few nights ago, he had a segment on things to buy for Christmas. He showed 5 or 6 things and told were they came from. Three of these items were from Etsy.com. I thought that was impressive.
