Hack for eCommerce

Jun 29, 2012

by podduturi

Etsy.com handmade and vintage goods

We all love buying and selling online, that much is clear, but do you love it so much you want to make it even better? Etsy is joining forces with the cash-based payment network, Dwolla, for New York’s first-ever eCommerce Hack Day, going down August 4-5, 2012, at The Hatchery. What coding tricks do you have up your sleeve for improving the experience of exchange between merchants and their customers?

If you are a developer who wishes to attend, there’s a special prerequisite puzzle. This will prove that you have the technical skills to program and help us keep the event high in quality, and competition. And the first 200 hackers to solve it will get free tickets to the event! Get yourself registered.

I didn't understand ANY of that. I guess that means that I'm no "hack". Which I always thought was a negative?!

I'm tempted to see what the puzzle is...maybe I'm cooler than I think?

I'm proud of myself for remembering how to FIND the source code haha! I figured out a tiny bit, but certainly not enough to consider myself a hack.

The only hack I've ever known is the Konami code. Guess this event's not for me.

Scary. You aren't going to let new "hackers" play with the site, right? It all sounds like fun. Just don't make us be the guinea pigs.

I gather the common definition of the term "hacker" and "hack" has changed, then? Because I understood "hacker" to mean someone who "hacked" into a system - entered it in an unauthorized manner, often with the intent to steal or disrupt. So help me god if this announcement means yet more experimentation by "let's see what happens if we...." techies with no clue about shopping behavior and no understanding that people depend on the revenue from their shops for basic living expenses, my head is going to explode. This is a selling platform, not some IT playground.

Hey, I just had a great big idea for the "hackers".... how about we tie their paychecks to the performance of their little "hacks." If your experiment results in a percentage decrease in views and/or sales, your paycheck decreases by the same percentage. Wait, let me guess - you'd never tie your own livelihoods to the success or failure of your experiments. But you're happy to put the revenues of the sellers here at risk.

To make work is simple, no great task, Anton. But I am live outside USA so it would make a waste of ticket to make resolution of puzzle :)

I tried to register, but the hackers are filled (it says N/A)...not sure if I know enough to be a developer either, so I'll have to skip this event.

Nice simple puzzle - the embedded clue makes it too easy... It is a shame I'm half way around the world otherwise I'd love to go...

Everyone has their own expertise and I am so happy to be in the hands of all those who actually are part of this. I haven't a clue and will stick to my own roles but thanks to all of you who are making this site even better.
