Etsy Statistics: June 2012 Weather Report

Jul 17, 2012

by sinoheterrero

Etsy.com handmade and vintage goods

June brought sunny skies and long summer days to Brooklyn, just in time for Etsy’s seventh birthday. It was a month filled with all the good things: beach time, summer reading, refreshing snacks (watermelon, anyone?) and backyard barbeques. The Etsy community had reason to celebrate as well, growing in members and goods sold compared to June 2011.

The stats:

  • $61.9 million of goods (after refunds and cancellations) were sold by our community in June, 6.1% lower than May’s $65.9 million
  • That represents 2,951,224 items sold for the month, 2.7% lower than May’s 3,034,442
  • 2,184,850 new items were listed in the month, 2.8% lower than May’s 2,248,143
  • 689,614 new members joined the Etsy community in the month, up 1,249, or 0.2%, from May
  • 1.23 billion page views were recorded on the site in June

The $61.9 million of goods sold (after refunds and cancellations) represents a 65.1% increase from June 2011’s total. At the same time, items sold were up 54.3%.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the Etsy community in June!

Still a huge increase over June of 2011. In my shop that was the case for sure. And I had a crazy good sales month in June, the best so far this year. Thanks for the information!

I didn't have a single sale in June, so I spent my time totally re-doing my tags and titles. Things seem to be slowly picking up.

Interesting! Certainly backs up what happened to my shop. What was the pro rata increase in sales $ and items based on the number of Etsy members for June 2012 against 2011?

Sorry, that should read against June 2011.

hooray! My card shop tends to be holiday driven so I've been looking to add other handmade goodies to help with what I anticipate will be the slower month of July and August. Maybe it's time to switch from promoting weddings to pets for a few weeks please please please? :)

Is there a breakdown of where the increases are coming from? i.e. Supplies vs. Vintage vs. Handmade... etc. How is the growth distributed over categories?

A "month" is not a fixed unit of time. For example, June is one day shorter than May. One day fewer or one day more in a given month from the previous month means at least 3% fewer/more days than the previous month. So a +/- 3 percent really often reflects no change (when the number of days is different). Have you ever considered a note in the weather report that adjusts for any change in the numbers of days?

I also, would prefer a breakdown of what's selling, and a lot more specific detail in the weather report. I only had one sale this June, and it's been slow sales since March for me. February was my best month.

We opened our store in June and here it is getting towards the end of July and we still have not had even one sale. I wish some of the prosperity would come our way. I am not going to sit here a whine about it. I am in the process of taking action. I am working to make our store work. Wish us luck. I really want to be part of these good looking statistics.

I'd love to see stats by listing category. My stats rarely follow the same pattern as Etsy's overall results.

I have just opened my Etsy page this day and found out it have severely changed. From a peaceful elegant online marketing place, dedicated to handmade and crafts, it became a commercial and advertising place for all web merchants, same as any other non professional sites. The top, bottom and sideways of the pages are all full with advertisement banners of any kind, that does not goes hand in hand with the original spirit of Etsy as we know it. Etsy's uniqueness as an online place for art and design is now lost. Also, the occasional lined and highlighted blue words in the text that sends us directly to "bing" is not cool, annoying and disturbing the eye. As of now, the Etsy market place is not more special than any other online market place and will soon lose its inimitable and intimacy. Hopefully these words will reach your ears and reason. Because we DO care about it!

I would love to see a graph of these etsy-wide sales over the years, with the timeline including mention of features as they were added. In the same way we look at the stats for our individual shops, and have little marks for when we list an item, you could have each feature marked off and labeled, e.g. "search by price range," "connected to pickie," "direct checkout beta", etc. Then everyone could see at a glance the effects these features have had.

I think it would be very important to know from the new members numbers, how many are shops and how many just buyers accounts. And would love, as said above, to see the numbers divided in categories: handmade, vintage, supplies, otherwise these numbers can't help a seller to have a vision of its own market. Thank you Etsy!

Interesting facts. I've just opened up my first online shop so am learning the ropes. I'm from Australia and I think direct online trade is the way to go. Bricks and Mortar shops are struggling down under.
