At Etsy, we have great respect for our members. It’s important to us that you’re comfortable on Etsy.We maintain a detailed Privacy Policy to let you know how we gather, use and protect your info. We’ve revised our Privacy Policy in an effort to make it easier to understand, and we’ve also made a few updates. Below is an overview of the changes, but we encourage all members to take time to read the updated Privacy Policy in full.

Clarity: We’ve improved the overall organization of the policy, including the addition of a short summary that highlights the key points of the policy. We also reworded some sections of the full policy for clarity.

Your Information: Some information is required for members, and some info is optional. The updated policy better describes your control over the information Etsy collects or receives about you, and how it is used. We’ve also included a section that explains how long we will retain your information. As a reminder: Etsy still does not share your information without your explicit consent, except as specified in our Privacy Policy.

Messages from Etsy: The policy now includes more detail about the types of messages we send our members, be it by email, occasional snail mail, or (in the future) SMS text message. We’ve also provided better tools in Your Account for you to control when you’d like to hear from us, or how you’d like us to contact you. Be sure to update these preferences for postal mail and email within the next two weeks, so we know how we may contact you moving forward. (If you choose to provide a mobile number for SMS, you’ll be able to allow friends to find you on Etsy by your phone number — more info on this when it becomes available.)

Cookies and Tracking Technologies: In order to continually improve our services for you, Etsy uses common technologies, similar to many other popular sites, to help us understand how people use our site. We responsibly use both first-party and third-party browser cookies, Flash cookies and clear gifs to provide us with only the data we need to improve your experience on Etsy. In respect of your privacy, Flash cookies, clear gifs, and any third-party tracking technologies are not connected to your personal identifying information from Etsy.

Social Site Integration: We’re making it easier for you to share Etsy content with your friends on sites like Facebook or Twitter. When you connect your Etsy account to a third-party application or social site, you can grant or revoke permission for that connection. When you load a page on Etsy that contains a social plug-in, such as the Like button, you are also loading content from that third-party social site.

Once again with this update, we’re proud to note Etsy’s Privacy Policy and practices have been awarded TRUSTe’s Privacy Seal. TRUSTe is an independent organization dedicated to furthering best practices in privacy online. Etsy also complies with the U.S. – EU & Swiss Safe Harbor Framework as set forth by the U.S. Department of Commerce regarding the collection, use and retention of personal data from the European Union and Switzerland. These are important marks of trust that signify our commitment to responsibly handling your information.

Whenever we make a material change to our Privacy Policy, we will notify our members. This week, we’re emailing our entire community to let you know about this policy update, as well as some other upcoming exciting changes to Etsy. Keep an eye on your inbox for this important news.
