Update to How Listing Views Are Counted

Jun 27, 2011

by efixler

Hello Shop Owners!

In some situations, when a search engine (or a 'bot') visits your listing, we count that visit as a view. We are updating how we count listing views to more effectively filter out views that do not represent a person looking at your listing.

When we release these changes, you will likely see your views increase at a slower rate. This doesn't mean that fewer people are viewing your listing. Since we will be filtering out visits generated by automated agents, the view count will now more accurately reflect the number of shoppers viewing your listing.

We'll be releasing this update in the next few days, and we'll post a follow-up message here when it starts to roll out.

If you have any questions, we'll be answering and providing information in this discussion thread:

We've turned off the views counting changes temporarily while we resolve an issue. I will post again when we turn it back on.

Hello again all.

I'm sorry to report that we're going to have to leave the view counting update turned off for now. Listings will continue to display views based on the old formula.

A few hours after we released the update last night, we began to have some trouble. This culminated in site outages that we reported on at .

We have figured out the root cause of the issue; resolving it will require significant changes on our end, and this will take some time.

I'm going to close this thread, and we'll open a new thread to announce the release again when we're ready to roll.

I'm sorry that we can't get the new views counting out today — we're committed to improving the accuracy of of view counting and we're working hard to get this done.
