Make Your Own Bag at the Etsy Labs

Aug 18, 2011

by Claire Comfort

As more stores embrace waste reduction by eliminating plastic bags, it’s time to start your own collection of cloth carriers. Thankfully, Bags for the People are back for a Craft Night of useful totes. Come to this workshop and leave with your own bag and the skills to continue making them for everyone you know.

Bags for the People began in 2009 when a few friends working at New York City’s Union Square Market got fed up with the number of plastic bags used every week. They decided to start making reusable cloth bags to give away. They now offer workshops throughout the city.  Can’t make it in person? Join us for an Online Lab at 3:30 p.m. ET.

Where: 55 Washington Street, Suite 712  (7th floor) Brooklyn, New York, 11201
: Monday, August 22. First session, 4:15-6 p.m. ET. Second session, 6:15-8 p.m. ET.
Webcast: For those of you who can’t make it in person, we’ll be doing a live online demo at 3:30 p.m. ET.

I've been using reusable bags for years, and any new ideas for new bags and how to make them are always welcome! I'd love to attend this workshop! I'm going to be in NYC from Canadia just for a week, but looks like it's all RSVP'd up :( *bats eyelashes* I don't take up a lot of space...

My state, Oregon, is seriously considering banning plastic shopping bags. So I am beginning to practice early for that event by taking my own sturdy shopping bags whenever I go shopping. Many of our local stores have for some time been selling nice, big, sturdy shopping bags with their store logo on them for a song---TJ Maxx, for instance. I also use them at home for holding projects when they are not helping me out with my shopping at the stores. So, for me, the big change will not be such a burden. I am a bag maker myself and plan to make shopping bags for friends and family for gifts soon. I will enjoy doing that. Besides, my bags and bags of left-over fabric scraps will soon go away.
