Improving Etsy Emails

Do you remember the very first thing you bought on Etsy? I still do. It was almost three years ago, before I started working here. I bought a pair of custom silver bracelets for my wife with some lyrics engraved on the side. She still wears them every day.

This holiday season, hundreds of thousands of people will make their very first purchase on Etsy. We want to ensure that these new members continue to shop and become active members of the community for years to come.

Starting this week, we’re going to be trying something new for members who make their first purchase. A portion of these members will receive a “Thank You” email a few days after their purchase. In this email, we’ll invite them to connect with Etsy via Facebook and Twitter and tell them about some shopping newsletters. We’ll also suggest other items they might like, based on what they’ve previously purchased.

As we move forward, we’ll also be including items and shopping features like our new Home and GardenFashion, and Kids pages in existing emails, like the order confirmation and “Welcome to Etsy” messages.

As an Etsy shop owner, what does this mean to you? It means that over 400,000 products a week will be promoted to shoppers through these emails. It means deeper connections between new shoppers and the marketplace. In short, we hope it will mean the beginning of a long-lasting connection between new buyers and Etsy. And that’s awesome.
