If you missed Carla Sonheim’s drawing lesson at the Etsy Labs in February, this Monday is your chance to learn a new water-based drawing technique with the talented teacher, artist and author of the book, Drawing Lab. Find your own copy of Drawing Lab on Amazon or an independent bookseller near you. For this workshop we will be using a water-resistant ink to create abstract portraits with ink droppers on hot pressed water color paper. For more of Carla’s work, check out her Etsy shop and paper doll project from this How-Tuesday post.

About This Week’s Teacher
Carla Sonheim is a Seattle-based illustrator. Her work exemplifies her belief in artists’ need to experiment with materials and techniques. In her own words, “As I work on and complete each painting, I am struck by how similar this process is to my life in general. Starting with imperfect wood (we are imperfect as people), and using a wide variety of materials and techniques (work, relationships, art), we can transform the imperfection into something beautiful.” Carla has taught an online drawing course called The Art of Silliness, which helps adults and children tap into their own creativity by encouraging the happy accidents and outcomes that occur when we allow ourselves to play.

Where: 55 Washington Street, Suite 712 (7th floor) Brooklyn, New York, 11201.

When: Monday, July 25  from 4-8 p.m. with demos at 4:15, 5:15, 6:15 and 7:15.

RSVP here.

Webcast: For those of you who can’t make it in person, we’ll be doing a live demo via Livestream at 3:30 p.m. ET. You can check out the feed right on the Etsy Community page.

More Upcoming Events with the Etsy Labs:

8/1: Mouse Pincusions With Ellen from The Long Thread

8/8: Sew a Skirt With Brett Bara

I love Carla's philosophy on being silly enough to let go and create, some of the most wonderful things were originally 'happy accidents'. Sounds like a really fun lab!

I love the artist's approach. She seems such a happy and fun person that applies her philosophy to her art. I am going to buy her book for my granddaughter who is very creative and loves painting.

I love these pieces! I can imagine the conversation between Lauren Castillo's "Grannies" and I can feel the texture of Hamjart's Sheep. They're all such fun!

I took a class from Carla last year and she is a wonderful teacher! I am self taught in a lot of ways like she was with water colors so her techniques meshed well with my skill level. Her class on silly is great too! Definately take part in this you won't regret it!
