As many of you know we recently launched a new feature, Circles, that lets you connect with other people on Etsy. When you add someone to your Etsy circle, you can follow along with their favorites in your activity feed. It's illuminating!
But it's hard to find people you know on Etsy, and we're going to change that. We're going to make it easy to connect your email address book to Etsy, so we can automagically find people you know who are also members.
If you don't want other folks to be able to find you on Etsy by your email address, you will be able to easily opt out through your account privacy settings. Your email address will never be publicly displayed. Only people who have emailed with you before would be able to find you on Etsy this way.
We're letting you know about this in advance, and plan to launch this feature in mid-February. We're in the process of emailing all Etsy members to let them know about this.
If you have any questions, please post in this thread and I'll help address them:

Here are answers to some questions that have come up:
Q: If I choose to use this feature, would I have to give Etsy the password to my email account?
A: No. You will not be giving Etsy the password to your email account. When you connect with an email service to import your contacts, a new window will open from that service for you to sign in securely and authorize Etsy to see your contacts.
Q: What will happen if I choose to opt out of being found by my email address?
A: If you choose to opt out of being found by your email address, you will not be returned in results when someone with your email address authorizes Etsy to view their contacts.
Q: Why do I need to opt out of being found, rather than opt in to be found?
A: If everyone had to opt in in order to be found, this feature would not be very effective. The result would be a poor first-time experience for most members.
We believe most people do not object to their Etsy username being found by people they know. For members who do not want to be found by their email address, we are going to make it easy to opt out.
Q: How will I be able to opt out of being found by my email address?
A: There will be a section on your account privacy settings page called "Findability" where you will be able to opt out. Your account privacy settings can be found via Your Etsy > Account > Privacy:
Q: Are you notifying all Etsy members about this upcoming feature?
Q: When will this feature go live?
A: We don't yet have a firm date for the launch of this feature, but we will post here when we do. It will happen in mid-February.

Q: I've changed the email address associated with my Etsy account. Will people with my old email address be able to find me on Etsy when they import their contacts?
A: Your Etsy account can only be associated with one email address at a time, the email address found under Account Settings in Your Etsy > Account. So if someone with one of your past email addresses authorizes Etsy to view their contacts, that old email address of yours will not be associated with your current Etsy account. It will not be a match, and they won't see your Etsy username.

Q: Wait a second! Will Etsy be accessing my email address book if I don't opt out?
A: Let me clarify how this feature works and what opting out means in this context.
If you do not want to be found on Etsy by people who might have your email address, you will be able to opt out of being found this way.
If you're not interested in finding people you know on Etsy, you do not need to use this feature.
If you're a seller and you want to be found by potential buyers who might have your email address, do nothing. This feature will just be another way to be found.
This feature is designed to help people find people they know on Etsy. It's largely aimed at buyers and new members. Anyone can use it, but we understand some sellers may not be interested in finding people they know here. That's A-OK. Etsy will not touch your address book or email anyone on your behalf.

If you don't want your Etsy username to be found by friends and family through this upcoming feature, for whatever reason, you can now opt out by adjusting your settings in the new Findability section of your account privacy settings:
