I Heart Art: Portland

Feb 26, 2010

by Vanessa Bertozzi

Etsy.com handmade and vintage goods

Indie hearts beat strong in Portland, Oregon, one of the craftiest cities in the United States. Working from Brooklyn here at Etsy headquarters, I think of Portland as our sister city.

Today, we are announcing that we are joining forces with the Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) and the Portland Etsy Team. We’re calling our collaboration “I Heart Art: Portland.” We are forging this ongoing relationship to foster opportunities and offer support for the local DIY/craft/vintage community. As a group, we’ll be partnering to host a series of indie business talks at PNCA’s Museum of Contemporary Craft and a series of Etsy Craft Labs this spring. (In addition to our regular Craft Nights at the Etsy Labs in Brooklyn, we’ve started collaborating with other museums such as the Museum of Arts and Design in New York and the Museum of Craft and Folk Art in San Francisco for similar hands-on sessions.)

Supporting local economies — especially through independent businesses — is important for Etsy, as a company and as a website built up on a vast network of local communities. Art schools and museums can help Etsy by serving as a home base for the local art and craft movement’s events, and Etsy can help by connecting curators, professors, students and members through our mutual passion for art, design, collecting and learning. We are thinking of this project in Portland as a pilot for Etsy’s outreach to local communities. Hopefully, Etsy will bring “I Heart Art” to other cities after this first run gets off the ground.

To kick-off this new relationship, Etsy, PNCA and the Portland Etsy Team will host an “I Heart Art” meet and greet at PNCA on Friday, February 26. This public event brings together the PNCA student body, the Portland Etsy Team, members of the Guild Council Program from the Museum of Contemporary Craft, and the thriving local arts and crafts community of Portland. Morgan, a.k.a. neonmorgan Etsy’s new Teams Admin, and I will be there in person to make new friends and meet old friends face-to-face. We can’t wait!

Here are links to some art-loving organizations in Milwaukee that might be a good home base for this type of project: (1) Milwaukee Art Museum (http://www.mam.org) (2) Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design (MIAD) (http://www.miad.edu/) (3) Eisner American Museum of Advertising and Design (http://www.eisnermuseum.org/)

Yeah! I love to see my hometown PDX recognized! My good friend in Portland introduced me to ETSY years ago, but never really understood what it was until I setup shop last month. I reside in the Cayman Islands now and think I may be the first Etsy shop here....There is a great Caymanian art community here and I think they are under-exposed. Who knows....ILoveArt, Cayman Islands 2011??

Hello from the 'Brooklyn' neighborhood in SE Portland, Oregon! What a fantastic opportunity to have in our community. Everyday I tell people about ETSY and the many opportunities for people to share their gifts and for others to purchase the best and brightest from around the world. Most people are delighted to hear about ETSY here! As we say here in Portland "Live Green", "Shop Local", and "Keep Portland Weird!".

(My biggest problem will be deciding what to wear!) I know this venture will be a terrific success. What a brilliant coup! Congratulations!

If not body, I'm sure with you in spirit! Too late to hop a plane plus we are snowbound, yet again. Come to northeastern Ohio/Cleveland asap. Our artists, arts communities, museums, galleries and other cultural amenities are among the best anywhere plus we're not that far from Brooklyn. The Cleveland Institute of Art, Kent State, etc., all have excellent fine arts/professional crafts programs.

This would be perfect for Winston-Salem, NC. The city is trying to deem itself "City of the Arts" and has some great universities, museums, and galleries including SECCA, Reynolda House Museum of American Art, Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem State, and North Carolina School of the Arts among many many others. WFU just started a student art gallery last year and SECCA is sponsoring a new initiative to join the artistic forces of the student bodies at the local universities. Contact me if you want to learn more about it! I'd love to help out or put you in contact with the "powers that be".

I would love to start this in Toledo, Ohio. I have already contacted some Etsy members to see if there is any interest and there appears to be. Three organizations that I think would be good to work with are The Toledo Museum of Art, http://www.toledomuseumofart; Toledo School for the Arts; www.ts4arts.org; and Arts Commission of Greater Toledo www.acgt.org. Could someone at Etsy give me pointers on how to get this off the ground? Thank you.

I love Portland. I was born and raised in Portland (now living in San Diego), and think the art scene and people there are the bomb! The people of Portland appreciate indie artists in all areas of commerce. PNCA is a great college to collaborate with. My mom received her BFA from PNCA and LOVED going to school there.
