How to Give Your Friends What They Really Want

Nov 22, 2010

Etsy.com handmade and vintage goods

Sure, picking out gifts for others can be just as much fun as splurging on yourself, but let’s admit it: not everyone on your list is as easy as your connected-at-the-hip-BFF or oversharer-twin-sister. When it comes to your tween niece or your daughter’s boyfriend, it can be hard just to get started. Rather than throw your hands up in gift-certificate surrender, we’ve released a new tool that gives personalized suggestions based on Facebook likes and interests. It couldn’t be simpler: just connect with Facebook and choose the friend you want to shop for.

You knew your college roommate was in need of prints for her new home office, but now she can enjoy her morning NPR under the benevolent gaze of Ira.

For Secret Santa, you thought it would be safe to get your coworker an iTunes gift card, but who knew what she was really up to on the weekends?

Don’t disappoint your mother-in-law. She just fed you a feast of latkes.

Have fun checking the tool out for yourself at etsy.com/gifts.

If you find this feature helpful, share it with your friends on Facebook, so they can use it to find something for you!

Q & A

Question: What if I’m not on Facebook?

Answer: Don’t worry, we’ve still got lots of great ways to find gifts for everyone on your list. Check out our Treasury filled with great finds from our members, sign up for our Etsy Gifts email, or browse through your favorite categories.

Question: Why can’t I see gift ideas for some of my friends?

Answer: The gift ideas are derived from your friends’ Facebook likes and interests, so we can’t always come up with ideas if your friends don’t have many likes on Facebook. You can always search and explore Etsy to find gifts for these friends.

Haha I tried it out and it's fun. It got my friend's likes correctly but fails to account for my friend's sex and age when providing gift suggestions. Still fun though.

Just be aware that FB likes and interests are product/company based and not everything nor possibly what really interests your friends. Only you know them best!
