Community Council Summary: March 2010

Apr 6, 2010

by Michael Hernandez handmade and vintage goods

Hello, Etsy community!

March has been a busy month for the Community Council, with the month’s activities nearly overshadowing the monthly meeting!

Danielle heard feedback from the Council on the current format and content of Etsy Success newsletters; the Council universally appreciated the content in Etsy Success emails, though several members acknowledged that life would often get in the way of reading the entirety of each email. Danielle also collected the Council’s thoughts on ideas for additional upcoming programming, including an Etsy Success Boot Camp email series. The Boot Camp series would be a set of emails delivered in rapid succession with tasks, downloadable checklists, and many other resources to help new Etsy sellers improve their shops. The Council’s consensus was that sending one of these emails per day for seven days might be a little too intense, and perhaps instead these emails could be best sent weekly or twice weekly to those who were interested.

Ian Malpass canvassed the Council before the Shop Flagging tool was released for reasons why one might flag a shop just in case we missed a likely reason during development of the feature. The Council looked at the possibility of adding an option to say something like “many/most/all of the items in this shop are mistagged,” but we prefer that tagging concerns be referenced in listing flags and shop flags be reserved for concerns that can’t be covered in a listing flag or to let us know that all of the items in a shop are not handmade, vintage nor commercial supplies.

Sean brought both the Treasury East beta to the Community Council (as reported in our returning Etsy News email) and addressed our plans to temporarily remove the “Request” button from Etsy’s header to make room for the returning Search dropdown. The Council largely agreed that it would be regrettable to temporarily have to say goodbye to the Request button, but that making the search dropdown more visible was the right thing to do. We’re still collecting feedback and bug reports for Treasury East, and we look forward to sharing it with everyone when it’s ready!

Communication was the focus of much discussion and our monthly meeting. We principally make use of the Forums and the Etsy Blog to communicate information about the site to members of the Etsy community, though we recently relaunched our Etsy News emails and post to when the site suffers downtime or a significant degradation in performance. The Council stated clearly (as many community members have in the Forums) that we need more than this in order to reach a greater portion of the Etsy community.

The Council’s suggestions for getting the word out were plentiful, but focused around three key ideas: firstly, that you should have ready access to communication in places you already go. Maybe you read the Forums or the Etsy Blog (and we hope you do!), but maybe you don’t. Nevertheless, chances are much higher that you check your email and visit Your Etsy (whether you’re a buyer or seller, but sellers especially). The Council stressed how important it was to make site information easy to access by providing it to you in places like those.

The second key idea was that many community members want nothing but the meaty stuff. Whether that means providing a feed for Admin posts in the Forums or receiving information from us via email, the Council thought it was important to have a category of information pertaining only to site, feature and policy changes.

The third and final theme behind the Council’s recommendations is the solid assurance that we’ll provide advance notice of all features or changes that could have an impact on Etsy members. The amount of notice given would depend upon the scale of the potential impact of each change. This and the rest of the feedback above has been very useful to us, and will help to shape the way we communicate with you, the Etsy community, in the future. See you back here next month!

Thanks for the update. I'm all for improved communication. It's disconcerting when I return from a short absence to find something changed, but cannot find any info about it. Even though I'm regularly in the Forums and check the blog daily, I feel that I still occasionally miss out on a big change or announcement. Email is the way to go!

Appreciate how much more Admin pops in these days...tons of forum comments to wade through (alot are redundant posts when questions have already been answered a page or 30 back). Maybe for folks that don't have greasemonkey to find them with, if they were clickable as one group as the forum progresses, at the top of the first page under the OP's statement? I'm just thinking too of how many people are on borrowed computers or at the library. Is this even technically possible? Thanks! There's alot to catch up on lately.

Those suggestions all sound fantastic! I can't wait to see the changes as they roll out. Thanks for the great work Community Council members. The boot camp 2 weekly emails sound brilliant for improving your shop, newbies and oldies alike all need as many tips as we can get in a nice easy to access and process formula. Using the forums for tips and advice are a fantastic resource but searching through and reading multiple posts about shop improvements can be very time consuming. An easy to save and read email Boot camp series would be a brilliant tool.

  • mcleodhandcraftgifts

    mcleodhandcraftgifts said 6 years ago

But I really like the e-mail coming often. Those emails help people like me, a newbie, to learn how to handle an Internet shop. To learn the skills we need to have. I would want to have tips and inspirations everyday vs every week ---- Can't wait for a week to get useful info.

  • nowonder

Thank you for the update. I would also like to add that Etsy focuses a lot of its Energy on increasing the number of international sellers. I think there should be more focus on increasing the number of international buyer.

I feel that Etsy does a wonderful job at keeping us up to date on what's going on. As a somewhat new seller, I am very interested in the "Etsy Boot Camp" series. Having something like that in my inbox would provide easy access to the features I'm sure I'm missing now. It can be confusing trying to "surf" the massive amount of information on Etsy and find what I need. Keep up the good work, and I look forward to becoming an active member of your community. Jodi

I've gotta echo my gratitude for all the the hard work that the Etsy Admins in the Council have done to bring us this news. It feels great to be able to have the opportunity to give feedback on these discussions. The Etsy Success Boot Camp emails seem to be well-received here. Since there are oldies & newbies that would like to go at different speeds, would it be at all possible to have an option to choose if you would like the daily to weekly when you sign up for them? I love getting Etsy e-mails because I can always use them as references later on. I believe we all find it a bit difficult to sift through the forums at times, even though we thoroughly enjoy being an active part of the Etsy community. Thank you for considering more direct forms of communication. Someone also mentioned an Etsy SEO Boot Camp. I'd like to second that!

I totally agree with the "communication" ideas that are beign tossed around. For example, I didn't even know this Council existed until today. And what I really think needs to be "communicated" in some very obvious way to all sellers is an "Ongoing List of Site Updates or Improvements" including the very long list of suggestions that I see in the forums daily. (A way to provide discounts to buyers, a "drop down list" for different size or color options for a buyer, a wedding or baby registry, etc. It would be REALLY good to know that Etsy is AWARE of these needs/requests and that they might be a TIMELINE of when and if Etsy is going to add them to the site. Thanks!
