Come Make Garland Books With Esther K. Smith at Etsy Labs

Apr 29, 2010

by Julie Schneider

Flex your paper folding muscles! This week we’re creating paper garland books with Esther K. Smith for Craft Night at the Etsy Labs! Join us for this evening of bookbinding — whether you’re in Brooklyn, or anywhere in the world.

Live far away? Stop by for our weekly Craft Night in our online multi-user chat room, the Virtual Labs, for a live online demo at 5 p.m. ET, or in person at the Etsy Labs in Brooklyn anytime between 4-8 p.m. at 55 Washington Street, Suite 512 in Brooklyn, New York. (Click here to see what time 5 p.m. ET is in your hometown.) Craft Night is a time to make things, sharpen your craft skills and connect with fellow crafters.

A guest book or a decorative garland? It’s both!  This week, on Monday, May 3, we’ll be expanding our bookbinding repertoires and making garland books (a.k.a. snake books) with artist and author, Esther K. Smith.

Esther is a Purgatory Pie Press designer and author of The Paper Bride, How to Make Books, and Magic Books & Paper Toys. She handcrafts artist books and limited editions at Purgatory Pie Press in New York City, collaborating with typographer Dikko Faust and other artists and writers.

If you are attending Craft Night virtually this week and would like to craft along with us, you’ll need to gather the following supplies:

  • Squares of foldable paper
  • Bone folder
  • Adhesive (such as a fresh glue stick)
  • Heavy weight paper or board for cover
  • Paper or book cloth to cover the board
  • Ribbon or string

Upcoming Events at the Etsy Labs in Brooklyn:
5/10: Stenciling with Ed Roth of Stencil1
5/17: Sewing Tote Bags with Kim of Tiny Hearts
5/24: Open Craft Night
5/31: Craft Night Canceled for Memorial Day
