Come Craft With Alabama Chanin at Etsy Labs

Mar 11, 2010

by Julie Schneider

Grab a sewing needle and get ready to appliqué, as this week we’re revamping our clothing with Natalie from Alabama Chanin for Craft Night at the Etsy Labs! Join us for this evening of stitching — whether you’re in Brooklyn, or anywhere in the world.

Stop by for our weekly Craft Night in our online multi-user chat room, the Virtual Labs, for a live online demo at 5 p.m. ET, or in person at the Etsy Labs in Brooklyn anytime between 4-8 p.m. at 55 Washington Street, Suite 512 in Brooklyn, New York. (Click here to see what time 5 p.m. ET is in your hometown.) Craft Night is a time to make things, sharpen your craft skills and connect with fellow crafters.

On Monday, March 15, Natalie Chanin will show you how to turn any old cotton T-shirt or garment into a couture fashion statement using special techniques, including Washed-Black Stenciling, Backstitched Reverse Appliqué and Circle Spiral Appliqué, from her new book Alabama Studio Style. Step-by-step instructions for Circle Spiral Appliqué can also be found in this week’s How-Tuesday post.

If you are attending Craft Night at the Etsy Labs in Brooklyn, please bring a T-shirt or garment to appliqué.

About this week’s teacher, Natalie Chanin: Natalie Chanin, a.k.a. alabamachanin, is the creative force behind the fashion and lifestyle company, Alabama Chanin, and the author of Alabama Stitch Book and most recently, Alabama Studio Style. Her company is based in Florence, Alabama and their products are all handmade in limited runs by local artists with recycled and organic materials, all of which are “grown-to-sewn” in the United States.

If you are attending Craft Night virtually this week and would like to craft along with us, you’ll need to gather the following supplies:

  • Stencil
  • Cotton-jersey base fabric
  • Cotton-jersey appliqué fabric
  • Cotton-jersey backing fabric (if your project calls for it)
  • Embroidery scissors
  • Garment scissors
  • Hand-sewing needle

  • Pins
  • Sharpie markers
  • Spray bottles
  • Textile or airbrush paint
  • Additional garment to upcycle (optional)
