Tropical Dreams

Mar 6, 2014

by Mallory McInnis handmade and vintage goods

I’m very pale — “Oh, look at all the veins in your arm!” pale. Foundation that looks like white-out pale. Extra in a Tim Burton movie pale. For dermatological reasons (as well as just a personal preference), my vacation daydreams usually do not involve the beach or heat. In fact, my ideal vacation spot is a city known for being rather miserable, meteorologically — London. And yet, almost every year when February and March roll around, I start fantasizing about a trip to the tropics.

Wouldn’t that be nice? To jet off and escape all the snow and ice? At the very least we can take a quick (albeit imaginary) trip to a balmy tropical island. Here we go…

[1. Toucan print by Jane Ormes; 2. Fruit socks by Strathcona Stockings; 3. Tray by depeapa; 4. Card by Supercrafti; 5. Vintage fish cutting board from Swear to Mod; 6. Palm leaf baby shorts by Double Yellow Line; 7. Monkey by Sally Nencini.]

You’re not at your desk anymore – you’re watching a toucan fly by or relaxing in the shade of a palm tree.

[1. Capybara planter by Cumbuca Chic; 2. Jungle print by Becca Stadtlander; 3. Moth print by Bee Things; 4. Vintage coloring book from lesaet; 5. Wave by Jolby; 6. Macaw brooch by Yanrong; 7. Mandrill mug by XiaoCrafted; 8. Dress from Croatia Vintage; 9. Echidna by Yoona’s Designs; 10. Gorilla card by Blackbird Letterpress.]

Instead of braving the cold to walk through the parking lot to your car, you’re taking a hike through the jungle. Instead of attempting to keep your balance on the ice, you’re trying to stand on a surfboard for the first time.

[1. Dress from Sunshine Girls Vintage; 2. Stoneware beaker by Laura Bird; 3. Notecard by APAK; 4. Hippo clock by Decoylab; 5. Hankie from Mrs. McVey; 6. Brooch by La Cravatte Du Chien; 7. Card by Byvik Ink Letterpress; 8. Hawaii decal from San Diego Vintage; 9. Iguana pin from Kline’s Jewelry.]

Say goodbye to your dog or your cat — you’re making pals with darting lizards and a friendly sloth. See you later, cocoa and steaming coffee — it’s time for an icy, fruity drink.

[1. Vintage book from  Charm Town; 2. Toucan lamp from The Little Biker; 3. Glass hippo from MidCenturyMary; 4. Painting by Calef Brown; 5. Belt from Scavenger’s Vintage Finds; 6. Vintage beach ball paddles from The White Mole; 7. Glittery tapir brooch by Rawaan Alkhatib; 8. Plant print by Plant Planet; 9. Vintage sunglasses from Many a Moon Vintage.]

Isn’t it nice to be surrounded by green again after what felt like ages and ages of glaring snowy whiteness?

[1. Sloth print by Amy Sullivan; 2. Tahiti tray from Le Strict Maximum; 3. Vintage bathing suit from My Drawing Number One Vintage; 4. Hawaiian party cookbook from Bombay Mermaid Trading Company; 5. Toucan print by Mengsel Design; 6. Vintage Barbie book from Willow’s Lair; 7. Beach hankie from murdups; 8. Silk fish scarf from vintagedame; 9. Toucan card by Charlotte Farmer; 10. Palm tree print by Blanca Gomez; 11. Monkey puppet by Furze Chan.]

But now it’s time to take off the pretend bathing suit and bid adieu to the figment-of-your-imagination tropical fish — we must head back to reality. Just try to remember that spring will be here soon enough.

I can identify exactly. I don't get tan. Ever. I have embarrassed my friends by lying out with them poolside with the beach towel over me rather than under. But I can also identify with longing for beaches and sand during Feb-March pre-Spring season. It may have something to do with the London-like weather I get to enjoy here in the Pacific Northwest.

Well for some of us, reality is not so bad even this time of year. I live in Florida near a destination beach, and seems like half of the northern US is visiting right now...and spring breakers haven't even started to arrive. However, during a winter like this one I'm quite grateful my parents transplanted us from Pennsylvania back before I was born! In summer we may suffer but winters are mild. Etsy offers a lot of tropical fun like what you have featured here...I love the vintage toucan lamp and the toucan brooch, and the adorable capybara planter that reminds me of my childhood pet guinea pigs. Thanks for sharing! and wishing you a warm spring coming soon.

I can feel the wind in my hair and the sand between my toes with these tropical delights! Really fun finds that make me long for a getaway.... I've been lucky enough to spend the past month in Arizona, escaping the winter cold. So I can't complain. Not quite tropical, but much better than freezing!

I love my location! Yes, I think I would love to visit a tropical island about now. Smiles! But, I live in Denver and I have the best of both worlds; lots of snow and lots of sunshine. I love it, here! But...Maui sounds tempting!

Love that day boyfriend and I went to the Caribbean a few years was so magical to see the string of islands dotted with lights as we flew in through the clouds on a very small plane...when we reached dry land the air was filled with exotic sounds of the island at night... it really was as if we were transported to an enchanted place...In the morning and throughout our trip was amazed by the ethereal quality of the clouds and the sky.... I could stare at the sky for hours laying on the beach listening to the waves roll in and out...

Alone looking at your selection makes me feel tropical - in a Pina Colada Way :-) And I hear you about the vacation dreams, I am extremly pale to - as in "paler than a dead body found in water" pale. I got my worst sunburn ever once at a family vacation in Italy. So while everyone was out at the beach, I stayed in the garden of our house, at least there was plenty of shade! (And yes, I did use sunscreen).

A wonderful and fun collection to admire as I get ready to bundle up to head to work this frigid Friday morning. We are all feeling the need for some tropical days here in Maine. Just yesterday my one of my elementary art students looked out the window and one of them noticed a tiny bit of grass where the snow had melted and exclaimed to us all, "look, it's grass!" Soon we were all at the window jumping up and down saying "hooray, grass!" Thanks for featuring my green hippo!
