Trends: Victorian Inspired

Jan 7, 2009

by Alison Feldmann

Ladylike accoutrement of a more civilized time have made their way to Etsy. With a mixture of antique lace, corseted silhouettes and mother of pearl buttons, the Victorian era has resurrected itself anew as a virtual font of inspiration. This collection of delicate accessories and clothing brings to mind grand balls, Gone With the Wind, lacy petticoats, filigree jewelry and Katherine Hepburn as Jo in Little Women.

Well, there was fab clothing in Gone with the Wind movie, but I always think about Scarlett holding up a fist of dirt saying she'd never go hungry again. And she didn't. Plus, isn't Jo the most non-lady-like "civilized" Little Woman? She chopped off all her hair for money for her family? Another woman after my heart.

Sorry folks, but that hat in the picture is NOT Victorian! It's Edwardian. Victorian era ended in 1901 with the death of Queen victoria, and with it went all the heavy black clothes - which included small hats. the Edwardian era, 1901 - 1915-ish, named for her son, Edward the something, brought in huge hats with lots of trims (and the endangerment of a number of exotic bird species) and frilly white and pastel blouses, and skirts fitted over the hips and stomach, then spreading out from hip to ankle. Corsets were still in the picture, just a different shape, as they had to slim the stomach as well as the waist. Not to be picky, but I do know what I'm talking about - wrote a book about vintage clothing in the 1980s and published an international newsletter about vintage clothing from 1984 - 1992, plus articles (and a column) in antique and clothing related publications Doesn't mean the hat isn't spectacular, it is, but for some reason it makes me want to keep the record straight re: eras. Hope this doesn't come across as offensive, as it isn't meant that way. I just think it helps to know what we're talking about. Both eras have lovely lace, and romantic clothing, although I think the Edwardians were much more romantic - the era of the Professional Beauties, who posed on post cards showing off gorgeous clothing and hats. Not quite as uptight as the Victorian era.
