Soon-to-Be-Dad: Andy of CircaCeramics Prepares to Baby-Proof

May 27, 2010

by CircaCeramics

Etsy.com handmade and vintage goods

CC_bio.jpgAndy Witt is the other half of Circa Ceramics, the shape-maker of wife Nancy’s colorful canvases. At 38 he was settling into a comfortable life of making and selling pottery. Then in the waning months of winter 2010 the two found out they had a little one on the way. Totally caught off guard, but beyond happy with the turn of events, their lives will be forever changed on or around October 30.

First of all, with the risk of getting poked by Nancy, I am really happy that pregnancy lasts 40 weeks. It is giving us time to adapt to our situation and to try and prepare for raising our first child.

When I first found out about our baby, I was really freaked out. My second thought was that we were going to have to close our business. The way we produce our work requires both of our hands to touch each piece of pottery and I am just not sure if we will be able to maintain this level of work. Luckily, the due date is in late October so with a little planning we will be able to finish our busy summer schedule and get a good jump on work before the holiday sales begin. Whatever the case may be, we know that we’re not alone and we are getting a lot of inspiration from other artists that have already been through this.

What I really enjoy the most about my relationship with Nancy is that we do everything together. All of our time is spent with each other. Having a child will not change this, and if anything will only make it better, as now our child will be right there along with us. It is going to require a little bit of work as we baby-proof our studio, but the added bonus of having our child grow up in a creative environment is beyond both of our own childhood experiences.

CC_Country.jpg

I think what I’m most worried about is trying to raise a child in a large city. I grew up way out in the countryside in a time when children were left to wander around by themselves. This will definitely not be happening. Luckily my parents still live in that idyllic setting, so I plan on taking frequent trips back home — I would like our child to be able to experience a little bit of the country life.

We’re still waiting for a week 20 ultrasound to find out if we’re having a girl or a boy. I think Nancy wants to have a boy, but I would like to have a girl. We’ve also been having a difficult time in the name department. So far, everything has been sounding like bad usernames, and we keep worrying about strong password protection. All joking aside, I am sure that we’ll know the right name when we hear it, it will just take a little bit of time.

For our nursery, we have yet to plan on what we’re doing. I’m guessing that I will be taking on a few remodeling projects this summer. Some of the ideas so far have involved animal motifs and the use of natural materials, but any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Please suggest any nursery decor that you think CircaCeramics
and other new dads would like in the comments!

congrats! what a beautiful thing that you and your wife work alongside one another, and plan to include your child in your creative life's work. i think using nature inspired motifs and all-natural pieces in your nursery and kid-focussed decor is a great idea too. kids respond to nature in such deep and meaningful ways - having mobiles with birds and animals, murals of forest or trees, all-natural wood toys, wool... these things can be so soothing for a little child, and grow with them too.

Congratulations! We're expecting our first in a matter of weeks... decorating the nursery was/is (yeah, it's not done yet) definitely a challenge! I ended up making my own wall letters because I didn't want it to look too much like a baby room (and they're now of course in my Etsy shop). I'm sure two creative folks like yourselves will have no trouble making it beautiful once you decide on which fabulous idea to go with!

congrats congrats! its a thrilling ride! as a new mama myself, it's one of those balancing act between scary, and totally amazing. just remember- time passes super fast, and that it gets easier and easier as it goes along. Many best wishes to you and yours for your life-altering joy! (picking names is HARD! and it's even harder when people ask you what names you've chosen almost every day. lol.)

'So far, everything has been sounding like bad usernames, and we keep worrying about strong password protection.' !! You are funny. I think a simple motif is what you should look for. I think keeping it simple, clean lines, uncluttered, esp. since babies and eventually toddlers have short attention spans and too much noise/clutter can upset them, plus the clutter will happen eventually anyway:). I recommend checking out www.handmadecharlotte.com. I was at the computer a lot when I had mine and researched quite a bit. A lot of the items I heart she has already cited on her blog..So excited for you and anyone who is having a baby!! Really magical time. Enjoy it and relish it, they grown sooo quickly:)

Awww congrats guys!! My kids are 3 and 5 now.. and let me tell you, babyproofing isnt so much of an issue until they can walk, but once they do- WHEW. I have a chain lock on my studio door, if that tells you anything, lol. So dont be too crushed for time, you have awhile after baby Witt makes its appearance to continue proofing everything. And also, dont worry about the whole "the nursery must be perfect" thing. Baby wont care... you have time :) Having kids changed my work schedule alot, but not really in a bad way. I do more early morning work, I work constantly through the day, but I never overwork myself, and I get alot more done at night when they sleep. Sure its hard finding a balance between housework, buisness, marriage, and child sometimes.. but you'll make do.. everyone does eventually one way or another. And hey, just imagine the day you find out exactly what happens to barbie (or GiJoe) when its placed in a kiln. Now that will be an adventure.

PS my little bit of advice is dont overpay for fancy creams/lotions/butt balms in boutiques or at the drugstore (some are as much as $8.00 an ounce!!)... check out some of the amazing etsy soap sellers on here. I dont have childrens items in my shop... but there are some FANTASTIC all natural products out there for baby if you poke around. I used quite a bit of them on my kids and they far and away blow drugstore brands out of the water :)

Congratulations!!! My advice is don't change your house too much, I know from my own kids, that when they grow up around objects that they can touch and be taught about their fragile nature they really don't break anything! Of course you have to be careful so that they don't hurt themselves, but as for baby-proofing your belongings, this is my strong advice!! Let them share your lives! All the best to you!!!

Congratulations! We have a 4-year-old and an 8-month-old and life is a bit crazy. But they are the most wonderful, perfect, inspirational things ever! And one day, when I get a moment, I'll actually set up my etsy shop and fill it with the wonderful things I've created whilst my little ones sleep... Always remember: the stairgate is your friend (once they're mobile) and you can use it a doorway as well! To keep them out of your studio/office/kitchen or in, doesn't matter. Just make sure they don't konw how to open it! Regarding names - we refused to tell anyone the shortlist (both times, we narrowed it down to two possibilities) until the baby had arrived, we'd tried the names out and decided what suited. Then, when the time was right we 'introduced' our kids to everyone with their names...it was great! And they both suit them (I think) perfectly.

Congrats! I wouldn't worry too much about the baby name - it will happen :) When we had our first baby the first thing out of my mouth was "Holy *%!& I just had a baby!" Next, "Get the BooK!" (as in the book of names)... it took us a bit but her name (and her sisters name) are both perfect and fitting. As for nursery decor - I just started making these patchwork kites - add some fun whimsy to your kids wall!

Oooh congrats! I love that Andy wants a little girl. Don't worry about the "big city" stuff; I raised my little boy in an apartment complex right in a busy business district in downtown Salt Lake. Granted.. SLC isn't all that big, but he didn't have a yard to wander to (as you were mentioning) or a place to ride a bike. We just made frequent trips to the park on nice afternoons and it was such a relaxing break. It was nice that I HAD to get out of the house, I guess you could say. Things'll work out just fine!

My parents made a big deal of putting in lovely curtains with zoo animals on (giraffes, elephants and the like) - with matching bedding and cushions. They were so proud of themselves that I ended up living with them until I was about 15! Go for 'temporary' stuff - like decals, mobiles, pictures in frames on brightly coloured walls instead of wallpaper. Kids grow up fast, and change their minds faster, plus it gives you room to be creative and change things around - especially if you have more littluns who might end up using that room and have different tastes! Above all, enjoy every moment of it, and congratulations.

I just had a baby and luckily planned a "maternity leave" into my business but I made the mistake of only planning for 4 weeks! It took me 4 weeks to feel like a human again - I could definitely have used a couple more weeks to take time to enjoy my baby instead of just trying to keep us both alive! Next week when I return to Freshie & Zero world, I'm going to hit the ground running! We did our nursery in a pale greenish blue and jungle animals but didn't go overboard on the theme. The animals on the crib bumper (it's from Land of Nod) have these big Egyptian eyes and gentle smiles and baby loves to look at them already. I know bumpers have a bad reputation but babies love looking around the world and bumpers are right within their eyesight so consider getting one that they would like to stare at for hours!

  • MiriMoMo

    MiriMoMo said 7 years ago

congratulations on the baby! I'm not expecting but I remember my first bedroom as it was originally my nursery. My mother is a whimsical woman, with a love of all things fantasy. So she had the nursery painted in simple, natural colours and had a good friend of hers paint a medieval tapestry inspired mural. The scene contained a forest, with the most magnificent lighting, a river with a tiny brook, a few woodland creatures and a Unicorn grazing where the most light shone through the canopy. Its been 14 years since I lived there, having left as a small child, but I still remember that spectacular scene right beside my bed. So i sudgest going easy on the decorating, focussing on one key piece if you plan to keep the room for a bedroom later. It will make their bedroom that much more memorable when they get older <3

Keep a low profile on the decor. Newborns go by scent and sounds more while their sight is still developing and everything is new to them. We started of with a lot of plain white and slowly built up the colors and the details. We were the decor at first, so to speak ;-) I wish you all the best and enjoy every minute.

Your lives will never be the same ... While you are adapting your business to the arrival of a baby, I got mine from that. I started making crafts 16 years ago when my first daughter was born and I made sure she had something handmade by her mother. Then came another baby, and more things and ideas, and another baby... and last year another one in November! - for now (lol) - all I did for my children I am happy to do for other babies. They are a kind of "guinea pigs" to my experiences in the world of crafts. Have fun and you will see that your baby will also be an inspiration to you. Feel free to check out my shop for some items I made inspired by my own babies.

What a cute story - congrats! We live in Chicago, too, with our 2 yr. old, but grew up in rural towns in Michigan, so I can relate to your situation. But our son, Finn, loves Chicago! He recognizes Lakeshore Drive, the Ferris Wheel, Navy Pier, the "Bean" (although he recently corrected my husband by telling him is was called the Cloud Gate-it was in one of his books). Plus I have had to learn to juggle staying at home with him as well as continuing my jewelry business. In fact, I will be at the Constructors Craft fair as well. Hope to meet you two in person! CONGRATULATIONS!!! I am expecting the beginning of August. This will be our 2nd (we have a 16 month old). That is so exciting. We are having a hard time picking out a name this time. With Jacob, we agreed right away. This time it is a girl and we are having a hard time. Good luck:)

We run a business each and have 3 kids now aged 35, 17 and 13. It has gone in a flash - I don't know where the years have gone. The eldest is returning to England soon and we will miss him, but we have to let him go of course. My advice is to you is a) choose a name that won't embarrass him/her b) teach her all you know c) tell her you love her every single day of her life and 4) enjoy the time you have together - it just zips by. Everything else is just detail!

Congrats! Enjoy this exciting time in your life! We have 4boys and 1 girl. They grew up in the city, and in the country. They all learned street smarts and how to build tree houses and such. The best of both worlds.

Congrats to you guys -- your kid is lucky to have such awesome and creative parents! I wouldn't sweat the city thing too much. I grew up in Chicago and I like to think I turned out just fine, hahahaha. I learned basic street smarts and personal safety at a young age, which in these times, are skills you need no matter where you live, in my opinion.

Thanks everyone so much for all of the comments! I just wanted to leave an update - We had our little guy! His name is Oliver, and he was born on October 29th (one day early, which shows he's already besting his parents! :)) You can see a picture of him here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/circaceramics/5136754708/ -Nancy
