Here at Etsy, we believe that the story behind an object is often just as fascinating as the object itself. Short Stories is our series dedicated to telling the tales behind extraordinary pieces found or created by Etsy sellers.

Here’s Harriet Gray on the inspiration behind her adorable temporary tattoos.

The first set of tattoos I made was just for a bit of fun. The idea came about after I spent the day with my nieces and nephew, and came home covered in cartoon dinosaurs. The dinosaurs lasted a few days, and when they were gone I kind of missed them. It got me thinking that I might actually quite like a “real” tattoo. I quickly came to my senses and realised I’m definitely not brave enough for that, so instead I started to think about how I could make my own, adult friendly temporary tattoos.

The first set I made were the owl and the pussycat trio. I thought it would be a nice touch to make tattoos for grown ups based on a childhood poem, so the first set I made was based on “The Owl and the Pussycat.” I used my cat, Jelly, as a model. Probably the most docile cat you will ever meet, and not one to be running off with owls.

Jelly the cat.

I was surprised at just how popular the tattoos were, so I decided to make more. Being a bit of a cat lady myself, it didn’t take much to decide what to draw for my next set. I kept Jelly and started drawing him a whole bunch of new friends. It was really fun making up all these new little characters, and now they’re my best seller!
