Here at Etsy, we believe that the story behind an object is often just as fascinating as the object itself. Short Stories is our series dedicated to telling the tales behind extraordinary pieces found or created by Etsy sellers.

Just in time for all that back to school reading, we discovered these charming bookmarks by CUT and TEAR. Here’s their creator, Kate, on how they came to be:

These dollies came into existence by chance. I actually dreamt of the dolls’ shape and sketched it out in the morning. The idea was that they would be a little bit odd, but that they would also represent real women and not Barbies. I thought that it would be fun to draw underwear as an unexpected surprise. And so was the first doll born!

I always loved mixed media and collage and I adore glossy images in magazines, so the dolls sport trendy haircuts. It makes them individual and sometimes funny.

While drawing each doll out, picking her hair and selecting her underwear, I always create a character in my head. Some are shy, some angry, some bold, some friendly. I think of their names and their lives, and each one is different. Sometimes they are loosely based on my friends.

There are now more than 20 dolls in my family of characters. So far, they are all females, but you never know. One day, some male dolls might appear …
