Here at Etsy, we believe that the story behind an object is often just as fascinating as the object itself. Short Stories is our series dedicated to telling the tales behind extraordinary pieces found or created by Etsy sellers.

Today Kate Broughton dishes on her adorable and arty nail transfers.

I’ve always liked the idea of nail art, but other than coloured varnish, I could never quite get into it. For one thing, I have short, stubby nails (I’d be too embarrassed to go anywhere near a nail salon!), and the loud and garish transfers I found on offer were just not me. I thought it would be great to have my own designs as nail art, and, after a little searching for suitable materials, I found a way to create my own nail stickers. I took some to a craft fair and they went down really well, so I took some photos and added them to my Etsy shop. They are my most popular items!

It’s taken me a while to get my head around around working on such a small scale. All my designs start off as drawings about 8 x 6 inches. Then I scan them in, add colour and adjust the line to make them work on a small a scale, whilst trying to keep the image as crisp as possible. It’s really exciting to try out new designs.

And I do wear them myself. I have to photograph them to list in the shop, so it’s nice to relax, do my nails and call it work!
