Here at Etsy, we believe that the story behind an object is often just as fascinating as the object itself. Short Stories is our series dedicated to telling the tales behind extraordinary pieces found or created by Etsy sellers.

We’re smitten with Old and Cold’s ingenious book storage system. Here’s Agusta on how their racks came to be.

The book racks came as a natural process of nesting our home. My husband is a furniture maker and we custom make almost every piece of furniture in our tiny apartment. We’re both gatherers at heart, and we find it extremely difficult to part with things we think we’ll be able to use someday. Since both of us are that way, obviously stuff builds up pretty fast. So storage is something we had our minds. We wanted something functional and aesthetically appealing that would complement its space.

We quickly decided that we wanted something that could be adjustable and flexible; something that could meet our needs in almost any room of the house. Once we came up with the idea to make a rack with detachable pins, the floodgates opened and ideas on how to use them started pouring out. One of them became the book rack! The books rest on a small wooden plate so the pages stay intact. We’ve had our book racks hanging for a while now and our books are happy, showing no signs of wear from this storage method.

We use the racks all over the house — in our bathroom for towels, in the kitchen for kitchen towels and cookbooks, in our bedroom for clothes, as bedside racks instead of a bedside table (saves a lot of space!), and in our living room for books. We also have one in the kids’ room for clothes and books. We find them pretty much indispensable.
