Making Time for Fun in 2014

Exercise more. Save money. Lose weight. Stop procrastinating and do…whatever it is that you’ve been meaning to do. Making New Year’s resolutions can be great, but many of the more popular ones can fill you with guilt when December rolls around again and you haven’t accomplished nearly as much as you’d hoped to when making your plans twelve months before.

I always set some of what I call “intense” goals for the new year, but I also make sure to throw in some fun resolutions — things that are fulfilling to attain, yet won’t fill you with remorse if you don’t manage to carry them out. You didn’t end up finding time to grow that herb garden or learn to tango? I think you’ll manage without a heap of regret. But if you did find time —  well, enjoy your deliciously flavored meals and being the star of the dance floor!

In the market for a fun resolution of your own? Here are some ideas and items for inspiration.

This is a great reminder! I resolve to laugh more in 2014. I realize that I have started taking everything so seriously! The past few times I've had belly-aching laughter, I realized how GOOD it felt, and how long it had been since I had previously done that. So I resolve to lighten up, to remember the lighter side of life, and to laugh.

Last year I resolved to make the most of my time living in London and take advantage of all the history we have here. I finally visited Westminster Abbey in February (a plan of mine for years), and then when I started dating my boyfriend in May he got dragged into it by taking me to the V&A on our first date :D In total we visited quite a few places, including Chelsea Physic Garden, Greenwich Park and the National Portrait Gallery. This year I've sworn to do the same thing, top of my list are now Hampton Court Palace and the Garden Museum. I think that people forget that there's plenty to do in their local area, you don't need to drive hundreds of mile for something fun, you can save money and energy by Googling and doing a bit of planning in advance. Having someone to go along with you helps enormously though ;)

Interesting ideas! With a baby on the way and settling into a new job, my goal is to become more patient and to be willing to take things as they come, rather than trying to micro-manage everything. It's very broad, but it's something I know I need to work on, and since I'm entering unchartered waters, I think looking at each day as a new adventure is the way to go.

Such a fun post! I always think it's a great idea to "lighten up" when goals are involved! I think that everything done with the spirit of play, is always much more creative!!! I do have goals but I usually don't wait until January 1st to set them, it's a year round thing for me but I try not to be too hard on myself! I'll try to remember to lighten up! It is good to have that January benchmark, though since I tend to reassess how "well" I have done on my ongoing list when that month rolls around!

I intend to not get stressed out... which is why I'm taking my shop in a new direction... focusing more on "my style" and "what I like" versus just what was making money in the past... for anyone who knows me, knows my new items are all "me"... second week in and I'm truely enjoying this process, and not forcing anything :)

I am so excited for this new year! My sister-in-law (the awesome Missprettypretty) got me to start with Etsy this year. It is a great place! Also, I am a participant in Rockford, Illinois American Heart Association BetterU challenge. It is hard to go "healthy" losing weight the correct way...no fads or pills. If I can encourage anyone else wanting to go heart healthy, please contact me. I'll send you over to the American Heart Association. Between ETSY and AHA...my heart and this year is off to a great start. Resolutions must be measurable and have a deadline. Choose something you know you can do...a small goal that will help you reach your bigger goal. My goal? Slowly changing my eating habits, especially my favorite snacking at night! INCHES difference. My other goal? Make my business count for my family!

What excellent resolutions! I love that a lot of them were concrete ("catch up with one friend a week," not just "talk to friends more"), because I think that makes resolutions much more likely to be accomplished. My most successful New Year's resolution to date (I still do it!) was "floss everyday." :D My resolution "theme" this year is to try more new things. I spent some time thinking about myself and self-improvement, and I realized that while I've improved in many ways, that I used to try new things more - even if I had no reason to think I'd be any good at it. So my concrete resolution is to sign up for a Krav Maga class. :D I loved your pillow with a boxer on it for that reason!

Thoughtful resolutions! This year I look forward to loving myself more, talking myself out of success less, beating the negativity voice in my head into submission, and finding the beauty in my world every day. So often I find that my environment prohibits me from feeling comfortable with emotional success, but I am learning it is in my perspective. I choose positivity, and embrace 2014!

This year has started with great new energy and a lot of new inspiration. I have never really had the habit of making new year resolutions but right now I feel to create some goals and directions for 2014. I feel the need to have some clear points to guide my development and a "to do list" with all the crucial steps that I can take in order to develop further. Everywhere I look, it seams that 2013 has ended with quite a lot of questions and frustration and 2014 has brought something else, a will and power to jump over the self doubts and aim for improvement on every level in life.

  • cagreen97

Cheryl Anne Green from JoshanneJewelry said 3 years ago

The best thing I could do for myself and others in 2014 is to first of all stop being so intense and lighten up a little, no, a lot. I am kind and friendly but can be too serious at times. Instead of adding more things for my mind to think about, leave the past behind, forget 2013, except for the things that grew me and focus on enjoying 2014. I purpose to change my fashion sense to what I have always loved, but afraid to be judged. Heck who cares, and heck yeah I am wearing upcycled clothing and yes, this used to be a man's sweater. lol. My inward change is to focus and get to know the God who created me and loves me and to encourage and build up others to feel confident in who they are. What a wonderful life.

For it not being the middle of January yet, I think I am doing pretty good on resolutions and I hope I continue to do good throughout 2014! I already play pickup basketball regularly so I plan on keeping that up. I have got a new hairstyle January 2 (which I love) Since I was in middle school I was able to make a ‘perfect cup of coffee” (or at least what I think is perfect), so I’m going to keep that up… Some Etsy suggestions that I would like to try include: Taking a ballet class Add more bright colors to my wardrobe Smile more Attempt to learn (another) instrument Eat a delicious breakfast daily (I get so busy I really even eat breakfast) Try driving a standard Get more sleep (This one definitely is at the top of my list and I’m sure it is for others too) I enjoyed reading everyone’s’ resolutions and hopes for the year. I saw many great comments. Good luck to all of you as you work on your resolutions! :)

Lately I find my self being very up-tight and agitated that I never seem to have even close to enough time to get all the things done that I would like to do, particularly with my etsy shop. With 2 young boys (3 months and 4 years old) it is pretty difficult to give much attention to much of anything else except them. So my resolution for this year is to accept that this is where I am right now in my life. My boys wont be young and need my the way do now for very long, so my goal is to slow down and enjoy my kids...play more, laugh more, let the house get messy every now and then, and know that in just a few short years, my boys will be older and in school and I will have the rest of my life to work on my exciting ideas and projects. For now I want to focus on them.

  • poplovedesigns

Andrea Hughes from PopLoveHers said 3 years ago

I've never been one for NYE resolutions. I've always been of the mind that if you want to change something in your life, you ought to get right down to it when it's relevant rather than procrastinating and pushing it until some arbitrary date that has little to do with why you want to change. So I guess in that vein - I resolve to keep being awesome and continue on my current path, wherever it may take me.

Thanks for the inspiration! New Year's has been a great time to reflect on what went well last year, and what I can do differently to make this year even more interesting than last. With the opening of my new shop, Mima Farms Bee Balm last year amidst the regular hustle & bustle of life - I learned that believing in something you love is well worth the investment of time. Every local show I went to was really successful, so I'm looking forward to the year ahead! & pouring a lot more balm too!! Cheers!!!

I resolve to worry less and stop and smell the roses more. I also want to take give back more and use less. And although I do love to shop, I want to cut back on consuming and be more thoughtful with my shopping. I guess in the end it is all about letting the best side of ourselves shine.

Love this post - adds a bit of whimsy and fun to the ever burdensome 'New Years resolutions'. This year I made several resolutions as usual, but more importantly, I promised to not take them too seriously. It's always good to start fresh and work hard, but I it's also good to remember to relax, have fun, and go with the flow!

With 2 small children under the age of 5, I find myself easily getting grouchy or frustrated in many situations. This year I have made it my mission to remember that this time in our lives should be FUN, magical and exciting. It's my job to ensure that I stay patient, loving, kind and FUN to ensure the important bonds we hare are cemented. The easiest way to do all that is to lighten up, let go, and see things from their perspective.

I love the idea of slowing down and enjoying life. We are so often caught up in making everyone happy and doing everything that we end up missing our on the most important things in life. This year I resolve to reclaim my life and allow myself to be ok with mistakes I have made in the past. I have a passion for crafting and everything homemade as a piece of me goes into everything I make. I hope to make "a piece of me" go into every part of every day!

I think my past resolutions have always been so "me" oriented- lose weight, exercise, blah, blah, blah- and I never stick to them for any length of time. I'm thinking maybe that's because I don't have to answer to anyone else for my action, (or inaction, as it were! :) I think this year I'll resolve to do one- just one- selfless, unexpected, and enriching thing for one person every month of the year... something that might even seem simple or small to me, but could be important for someone else. And I don't want to do it for thanks- then it would just be for me, as usual. I think this would make me feel like it's important to keep my resolution; then, for the first time, I might keep my resolution and feel better for it inside...wait...would that still be for me, then?...

After a rough run in 2013, I'm welcoming 2014 with open arms! This year I have made conscious resolution to reclaim my happiness through embracing my inner artist and sharing my vision of beauty with the world :) Being crafty can be so cathartic! When you re-illuminate your world through design, you no longer see things as they are but, rather what they could be. It's a magical feeling. I say with pliers and wire in hand, bring it on 2014, I'm excited you are here! Cheers :)

I resolved to make time to enjoy life. Last year I managed to attend graduate school full time in Engineering, plan a destination wedding without a wedding planner including making my wedding stationery and decor myself (hence my new Etsy store, SyrcDesigns), work about 60 hours a week at my 9 to 5, and try to grow a handbag business (www.syrcstyle.com)....all while maintaining a home. I was often sick due to lack of sleep and exhaustion. Looking back on it, I don't know how I did it and I wouldn't recommend it lol. Currently, I'm in last semester of graduate school and I choose light yet informative classes. I got promoted at my job to a less demanding position (time wise) but I also make restrictions on the amount of hours I work. I just turned 30 on Jan 7th and feel my best years are to come! in 2014, I would like to focus on growing my businesses and enjoy the life I'm building with my new hubby :)

I'll pick "try to catch up with one friend a week". Or maybe add more to it - "to try to make a friend/reconnect with a friend a week". To explore social connections through all those interesting ways/channels will definitely be one of my priorities in 2014.

This post made me smile. Sometimes the small changes are the ones that give you just the right momentum you need to get yourself moving again. And sometimes I'm shocked at how I can be inspired by such seemingly small things, like seeing an old map in an antique store, or taking a different road home.

Super energy here and great stories/resolutions. Mine is easy ... focus on my own style of "random chaos," embrace that vs. trying to please everyone = mission impossible. Sometimes we get so caught up in how trends are perceived that we lose our best asset--doing what we do best, perfecting that, and living in the moment.
