Promoting through the Holiday Rush

Nov 23, 2007

by bethela handmade and vintage goods

After the mad dash that hits the after Thanksgiving holiday sales, throngs of shoppers turn to the internet to meet their holiday gift needs, many times using any time they can get online — whether at work or late at night.  According to ComScore, holiday shopping is already up 17% this year and many expect a significant increase in online shopping as we head deeper into the holiday season.

The chart below illustrates online shopping patterns in 2006.  Notice a sharp increase starting on the Monday after Thanksgiving.  If you are looking for more detailed information, check out the full report from the Atlas Institute, downloadable as a pdf.

[An index of sales volume by day for the 2006-2007 holiday season.  A score of 100 indicates a day of
average sales volume for the period.  Weekdays are in green, weekends are in red, and Thanksgiving, Christmas,
and New Year’s Day are in blue. The busiest online shopping days are Mondays and Tuesdays, with a dramatic
drop-off in sales after Cyber Monday, the busiest online shopping day. Source: atlas institute]

So how to prepare?

Review shop announcements

Make sure your shop announcement is appropriate for the holiday season.  Let your shoppers know if you offer gift wrapping (here’s the Storque’s how-to), expedited shipping (another Storque how-to) or other special services for the holidays.  These little extras are important to many time starved buyers.

Seek opportunities to promote your shop

  • Off-Etsy promotion – Increasing blog posts about your products, promoting your Etsy store in local establishments, etc.
  • Showcase promotion Etsy now has many ways to advertise your items and your shop across the site.  Category Showcases are one way to get your item noticed.  These are great spots because you can already target buyers looking for, say a toy, if they are in the Toy category.  We also have the Storque Showcase, the Main Showcase, and the Gift Guide Showcase — all great ways to get your products seen.
  • Forum promotion – Get the word out about your great products.  Check out this how-to to succeed using the promotions section of the forums.
  • Shop Presentation — Make sure your photographs really pop. Admin can only feature items in Gift Guides and on the frontpage if your photos draw people in. Check out these how-tos for help (Forty’s Foto Tips, terrain’s series, look in the Storque’s how-to section for more!).

This is an exciting time for all of us.   Looking forward to seeing your sites promoted across Etsy and across the internet.  Get out there! And comment below if you have tips for your fellow sellers!

Interesting info but it appears that you are actually promoting the Showcase spots, without much else. I would like to see statistics if the added expense for Showcase spots really pays off for Etsy sellers. And it isn't the only promotion tool. It would have been nice to see a more detailed article on postcards, posting free ads, etc.

eneefabric I track if I have sales after a showcase and so far they've paid off. After a showcase, I've always sold something. When I buy spots, I do wonder which day of the week would be best, from the chart above, seems Sunday and Monday are good choices.

What a great checklist for me to do some "spring cleaning" in my shop. I never thought how important it could be to offer something like expedited shipping around the holidays. Thanks so much Bethela!
