News From the Craft + Style Blogosphere: October 28, 2010

Oct 28, 2010

by Alison Feldmann

“Some people have a way with words…some people…not have way.” — Steve Martin

This week’s edition of News From the Craft + Style Blogosphere has anthropomorphic fungi, appetizingly messy ingredients, folded paintings, dark rooms and green architecture icon (and all-around cool dude) Lloyd Kahn.

Sweet sassy molassey! Food styling just gets better and better, doesn’t it? The glorious spreads from Ikea’s new cookbook, Homemade is Best (Hembakat är Bäst) quickly made their way around ye olde blogosphere this past month, but Marina Aurora’s elegantly messy arrangements were, in fact, done first. Take that! [Via Trendland]

I guess you could call me noir obsessed (and I won’t fight it!). Photographer Graham Akins-Hughes and his partner, stylist Jo Atkins-Hughes, have created a dark model home that begs to be lived in (cough, by me). The pottery, the light fixtures, those walls! Can you believe this is just for backdrops and photo shoots? I think I’ll become a squatter in my next life. [Via Door Sixteen]

You may be thinking that these are hastily unfolded bed linens (and creatively dyed, at that). However, they’re actually acrylic on canvas, entitled fold paintings. Isn’t the texture awe-striking? Painter Tauba Auerbach creates a three-dimensional, non-Magic Eye experience with simple paint and canvas. I’m impressed. [Via I’m Revolting]

Lloyd Kahn is an icon of the sustainabile architecture and green building movements. As found of Shelter Publications and former Shelter editor of the Whole Earth Catalog, he has brought some of the more beautiful handmade homes across the world into the public eye, as well as building geodesic domes in the ’60s, and he’s still surfing and skateboarding at age 70. Is there anything this man can’t do? Watch the video to absorb his wisdom on sustainable home building. [Via One Trip Pass]

Antique fungi illustrations are the best, especially the anthropomorphic ‘shroom. [Via AM on the Present Tense]

Holy wow the paintings are insane! I looked three or four times and I am still having trouble making my brain register that they are canvases--I would love to see these in person. Also, although white is by far my favourite colour--maybe I'll have to take up squatter rights on that noir house too :) I usually avoid promoting my shop in Storque comments but this is too serendipitous to resist: I have a bunch of mushroom illustrations from the 1970s, similar to these (but not as old and gloriously worn!) right now and more on the way. I was thrilled to see these posted--I have a new appreciation for the ones I kept :)

The paintings (!) are crazy...kind of eye-searing, in a way. And I think mushrooms look like something out of an old sci-fi movie. I've seen a lot more fungi since moving to the Seattle area where they're absolutely everywhere.

Homemade is best, food, shelter in all its forms including clothing! Lloyd Kahn tells it like it is: all those overbuilt homes are already outdated, it's time to go back to something more sensible. My mantra, too, for a long time. It's a lot easier to build/alter your own home, and do it sustainably, with salvaged materials, if you're in an area without zoning. Found some original Whole Earth Catalogs & supplements. They are as relevant as ever. Never was a dome fan, though. Simple geometry works fine. Thanks so much!
