“But, like ivy, we grow where there is room for us.” — Miranda July

This week’s edition of News From the Craft + Style Blogosphere has nature under wraps, hyperbolic animal sculpture, transcendent wardrobes, ethereal dust clouds and more.

Why not?

Adornment isn’t just for bling-loving homo sapiens. All animals should be able to channel their inner disco dancer if they so choose! Elizabeth McGrath‘s visionary sculpture shows off the festive trappings of buffalo burlesque, gilt mice and antlers as sailboats. [Via mtraub]

I’ve already professed my massive lust for Mociun‘s feminine tie dye, but their recent collaboration with celestial-inspired Shabd has hurtled my interest into the stratosphere. The mottled patterns and imperfect prints make for a wardrobe canvas. [Via Shiny Squirrel]

Dust cloud or ethereal spectre? Ujin Lee‘s portfolio reminds me of a divine mashup of spectral photography — when iridescent bubbles, a.k.a. ghosts, appear on photos — and watching the dust settle after an explosion. I’m pretty fond of the many forms the cloud assumes — running man, Big Dipper, wallflower, spilled sugar… [Via Je Voudrais Que]

naoko-ito-3-1_Flora-640x640.jpg

This elaborate branch setup is confined within a tangled web of glass. It’s mildly disconcerting (and awe-inspiring, I must admit) to see nature so contained. I don’t know how Naoko Ito accomplished such a feat, but I’m giving him the proverbial “golf clap” as we speak. [Via Colectiva]

    O. M. G. the art featured in this blog is SO interesting. The didactic relationship between humans and nature is ever present in our society today! By embellishing animals and plant life we are not only speaking about the commercialization of nature but how we relate to it an inverted way. Naoko Ito's piece seems to be about how people want to access nature but in a way that is "safe" and contained so as not to get too messy or interactive. As people, we always want to be in control! P.S. Thanks for quoting Miranda July, LOVE HER!

They are all amazing work, but I'm particularly blown away by Ito's. I have a fondness for installation art, especially if it's comprised of repetition of a single object (much like the garments of Cat Chow). The simplicity makes for a really stunning piece. And on another note, that sheep looks pretty smug up there heh.

Absolutely amazed by the first set of sculptures, particularly the stag and the buffalo. The stag is this ghostly creature, done in blues like that, and the red eyes seem to give it just a hint of menace. The buffalo, though, has another mood entirely. It's this sad, forlorn thing, and it's tinged with nostalgia for the days when it roamed the plains and when steamboats ruled the Mississippi.
