How-Tuesday: Make Something for Mother’s Day

May 7, 2013

When it comes to gifts, my mother often got the short end of the stick. From colorful macaroni necklaces that dyed her neck, to smelly perfumes concocted from mashed flowers, to cards so lavishly glued that their heartfelt messages remained an impenetrable secret, our gifts to her really ended up being her gift to us: letting her children discover the wild, transporting joy of making something for someone else.

It’s been a while since I made something for my mom, and she definitely deserves something nice. Since the days of crayons are far behind me, I’ve rounded up a collection of tutorials and downloads with a bit of grown-up appeal. They are gifts you can make with a childhood sense of glee and gratitude, and that your mom will be happy to get.

A Pop of Color

Top row, left to right:
1. Sachets crafted from bright felt add a blooming touch to her sock drawer.
2. A phone case adorned with pretty blooms makes every text a pleasure.
3. Vibrant scarves made with the wax resist method are a love letter she can wear and treasure.

Bottom row, left to right:
1. Dots of glass paint take a ho-hum vase to new heights.
2. With this downloadable tutorial, you can craft a beaded necklace that will take her breath away.
3. Learn how to arrange an artful bouquet of her favorite blossoms.

A Touch of Luxe

Top row, left to right:
1. A downloadable template lets you craft a card that will help her ambitions bloom.
2. Handmade watercolor paper flowers can be made to hold a gleam of gold in their hearts.
3. Make her a ring from her favorite earthy gem.

Bottom row, left to right:
1. A sugar scrub infused with coffee and cinnamon is a pampering indulgence.
2. Go professional with a geometric laptop sleeve you can make yourself.
3. Dazzle her with delicate gold leaf paper-maché bowls.

What’s the best thing you’ve ever made your mom?

Handmade gifts are a great idea for Mother's day, even if it's just a small handmade item paired with another treat. I think so many people appreciate the time and effort that goes into making something.

Making a unique piece for my mom last mothers day was one of my inspirations to start my shop this past november! I also made her a gorgeous gift for her birthday as well. Beautiful ideas! Thanks a bunch.
