Marvelous Mushrooms

Kaylah Doolan is a full-time blogger over at The Dainty Squid. She lives near Cleveland, Ohio and frequents the area’s beaches, cemeteries and thrift stores. She collects many things, including teeth, cuckoo clocks, globes and brooches. The Dainty Squid is her little corner of the web to share photos of the critters she meets on adventures, quirky outfits, and more.

On a family camping trip a few years ago, I really noticed mushrooms for the first time: they were everywhere! I photographed and gathered them so I could admire them some more the next day. My love for fungi has only continued to grow since that trip; I love finding, identifying and incorporating mushrooms into my daily life. Here are some of my favorites on Etsy.

This lunch bag from Little Lark makes me want to pack up a meal and head into the woods in pursuit of mushrooms. You could even use it to hold the mushrooms you find while foraging!

These are totally safe-to-eat psychedelic mushrooms. My dream wedding cake would be covered in these! And Andie’s Specialty Sweets has lots of other varieties of mushrooms as well.

I’m a brooch fanatic, I own tons. This mushroom brooch by Finest Imaginary (one of my favorite shops!) would be a welcome addition.

This mushroom pin cushion would look equally adorable sitting on a bookshelf or covered in pins.

Vintage pull down charts are always neat, but when mushrooms are involved, they’re about ten times cooler.

I love candles, but oddly enough I don’t have any mushroom candles. This morel by Peace Blossom Candles is incredibly detailed.

These Amanita muscaria would make a lovely addition to your terrarium.

MaryMaryHandmade makes some of the cutest jewelry — including smiling mushrooms for your ears!

This necklace made from a spore print is probably one of the coolest things I have ever seen.

This mixed media collage by Susan Farrington is so incredible.

What a wonderful post! I love mushrooms! They remind me of bedtime stories, fairy tales, deep dark forests, enchanted creatures and magic. Mushroom rings are the place where fairies dance and prance under the shimmering silver light of the full moon.

I love the mushrooms! I make mushrooms too -- mine are mad little mushrooms, (there's a story that goes with them) which is funny, because one of the comments says you can't look at a mushroom and feel angry, which may be true, but that doesn't mean the mushrooms can't get their stems in a bunch.

Soon it will be mushroom season here in France and I love nothing better than to go and find ceps. I have found som that have weighed as much as 1 kg! We could only carry a few home. I made the most amazing wild mushroom soup. We also find cauliflower mushrooms, they look a little like a sponge. They taste delicious and they are also very large so they make many meals.

I took a workshop in Peter's Valley years ago. It is very damp in that area so things tend to grow in odd places. I went into the kitchen, opened the cupboard which was empty except for this huge fungus growing out of the wall which was covered in 70's mushroom wallpaper. All it needed was a can of Campbell's mushroom soup. It was so bizarre!

I live in Germany, and Autumn is without doubt my favourite time of year. I go out mushroom 'hunting' once a week usually, then cook up a feast when I get home: Risotto, Stuffed Ravioli, Gnocchi ai Funghi!! Best perhaps, is just some fresh Steinpilz (Porcini / Boletus edulis), sliced thickly, sauteed in butter and garlic on bruscetta!!! What I don't eat I dry on my homemade racks on the radiator for the rest of the year! The 'red & white' ones (Amanita muscaria), whilst not really edible are perhaps the most well known (infamous) mushroom in the world, with some amazing stories attached to them! For instance, here in germany they are known as 'Fliegenpilz' (fly mushroom), because in mediaeval times they were cut up and put in milk to attract flies who would then be poisoned. Also, they are fed to the reindeer in finland (who love them anyway), but who then hallucinate and do some very strange things! Anyway, I love the Pull down chart, so beautifully drawn & coloured. Perhaps an odd thought but, many mushrooms can be dried, including the A. muscaria. maybe someone could make something out of them.?????

I too love mushroom decor and more! :) I rhymed! :) Thank you for this collection! I have never seen morel candles either, those are amazing! I love the red and white amanita mushrooms, they are so cute, and just call to be replicated in art!! Such expression was shown in the adorable Amanita (red and white mushroom) costume I made for my son for Halloween last year!! Felt and fake mushrooms go together sew well!! :)

Great picks! I love them all. Especially the pull down chart and lunch bag. Too cute. Where do you find the teeth that you collect?

We love all things mushroomtastic. One of my favourite commissions was in Spain at a dance venue where I was provided with meters of denim with which to paint as many neon mushrooms as I liked. Great memories x
