Rediscover the addictive art of decorative knotting with this easy macramé tutorial featuring Kitiya Palaskas. These ’70s-inspired gems are hanging all over the world, and why knot? Their comeback shows they’re a furnishing that will stand the test of time, and you can repurpose things you have lying around at home to pull them together. Old nylon or cotton ropes, yarns and cords work a treat; just make sure they’re got the goods to hold the weight of your plant.

YES! My grandmother had a few in her house when I was a kid. They can look very nice or totally funky and 70s. You can really customize these with the string, color, plant, pot, and knot choices.

I love macrame! I have a macrame purse that I use, and it is sturdy, yet flexible. I can carry one thing or 3 books, and it never looses it's shape!

Wow, remember the tables and chairs, oversized hooks that had to be firmly bolted into the rafters. intricate designs and so much more. Great fun, glad to see the revival.

I love macrame. I keep telling people it's coming back - so I'm glad to see this video! I do micro-macrame in my shop which is a much smaller scale for jewelry. But I'd love to make some larger items like this for my house!
Lois Gaylord from LoisGaylord said 8 years ago
Anyone interested in some vintage jute??? Recently sorted all of my yarn and unearthed the jute purchased back in the late 70's for macramé. I've got 10 tubes of some medium sized blue, a large ball of olive green and two really big tubes of large natural color. Send me a convo. Love the serendipity.

Diana Maldonado from MyMercado said 8 years ago
Wow! I made SO many of these when I was a teenager. I LOVED to macrame. I made one hanging basket that was about six feet tall. It had a planter and a glass table at the bottom. My parents had that for YEARS. Thank you for the trip down memory lane. :)

Thank you for another essential article. Where else could anyone get that kind of information in such a complete way of writing? I have a presentation incoming week, and I am on the lookout for such information.
MC Melick from PlaywithFood said 8 years ago
I make these too, so easy. Most people have the same hooks in their house somewhere from the 70's. Glad the fad is coming back.
Sharon Parker from ArtyDidact said 8 years ago
Haha! I remember those. I don't know, I'm just not getting the 70s nostalgia, myself. I'm quite happy to let that decade slumber. There is a practical value to those macrame plant hangers, though, I'll admit that much!
Keri Endres-Bercher from sudsymittensoap said 8 years ago
I used to make these in the 70's! Got to admit, they are handy for organizing your plants and getting them off the floor or counter. I think they look spectacular!

My seventh grade art teacher taught us how to make a macrame owl and I fell in love with the class. She was our neighbor for many years and she had a twin bother that was so dreamy at the time. Thanks for sharing this, brings back nice memories.

Yes, Thank you refreshing my I used to make the 9 foot long, we had very old home with high ceilings. What a beautiful touch for anyones home. I love to see plants hang, espically spider plant and trailing are so pretty. I made walls of them in my home when I was younger. COLORS and material was key in this project.

Huh, macrame is one of those things (much like crocheting) that I never got around to learning... and looks like it's a little silly of me, it's not really that complicated now is it?! Now if only I could learn how to keep the plants alive long enough to hang them....

Deborah Leonard from TwIstEdKnoTz said 8 years ago
Its a great video, but I would suggest slowing it down a bit so that perhaps people unfamiliar with macrame can see exactly how you are tying the top and bottom knots. Also, verbal instructions would be very helpful.
rebecca wickenton from LittleStitchDesign said 7 years ago
Great tute, cant wait to make, any idea what sort of rope i need? Would love some bright neon colours, but limited to what i can get here, Is there somewhere you can specifically buy macrame rope/cord?
