Every mom deserves pampering on her special day. Breakfast in bed? Been there, done that. Breakfast in bed on a beautiful tray made with photos of everyone Mom loves? Now we’re talking! This project is an easy way to make Mom (or Grandma, or Dad, or anyone you love) feel extra special. Even better? It’s a great project for kids and adults to make together.
At a glance
Time: 1–2 hours plus drying time
Difficulty: Moderate

You will need:
- An assortment of photos (home-printed photos are fine)
- Scissors
- Rimmed tray
- Glue stick or paste
- Resin kit
- Disposable cup

Step 1: Cut out your photos using a sharp pair of scissors.

Reserve some larger photos to cover the base of the tray and spread them out to cover as much real estate as possible. Layer your cut-out photos on top.

Step 2: Use a glue stick to paste down the photos. You’ll find that most glue sticks are forgiving if you decide to move things around a bit, and smudges are easy to wipe off the surface of glossy photos so don’t worry about making minor adjustments. Allow the glue to dry.

Step 3: In a well-ventilated room, while wearing gloves, mix equal parts of resin and hardener (both bottles will be in the kit—follow directions accordingly). Be sure to use a disposable cup, as the resin will not wash off.

Step 4: After the resin is thoroughly mixed it should be the same consistency as maple syrup. Pour a thin layer over the tray and give it a few minutes to settle and spread itself over the surface. You might want to help it move along with a plastic utensil, but don’t worry about smoothing it out. The resin will smooth itself in time.

Step 5: Most air bubbles will dissolve after an hour or so, but you may want to poke them with a pin if you see any stragglers. Dry time will depend on the size of your tray and how thick you poured the resin, but usually 48 hours will do the job. Be sure to let the tray cure on a clean, dry, level surface.

When the resin hardens, it will be smooth like glass. And now you’re ready to surprise Mom with a homemade gift that she can use as a functional tray year-round. It’s the gift that keeps on giving!

What a cute (and easy-to-make) craft! I have been meaning to try something similar with the vintage silverplate trays I have in my shop - chalkboard paint on a tray for creating hand-written messages. Now I will have to sacrifice two trays from my shop! This vintage girl feels a craft day coming on! Thanks for the step-by-step!

How sweet! You could also decoupage tins from the same company the trays are from (some have the same rim)! Fun!

When working with resin, be sure to read the directions for the specific product you are using. The resin I use has proportions of 2 parts resin and 1 part hardener. ¤ Some other notes: The room temperature should be higher than 72° in order to get a glossy surface. Warmth brings the bubbles to the surface. (No matter how carefully you stir, there will be bubbles. This is a quick craft project, so it isn't as critical as it is in my jewelry, but they are a distraction and will form in the worst place.) ¤ Place a raised box or other cover over your work while it is drying. 48 hours is enough time for every dust mote on the block to find that lovely fresh surface. ¤ Do not test to see if it is dry yet before 2 days have passed. It will leave a smudge, if not a fingerprint. ¤ Someone above mentioned light switch covers.... If you are working on an item without a lip, check out Pebeo's Glazing Resin. This is thicker and will flow to the edge, with prompting, and then stop. (I think ICE has a similar product.) ¤ Be careful: protect your hands, surfaces, and never reuse tools for anything food-related. Dried resin is almost impossible to remove. (If you use an eXacto knife to pry it off metal or glass, protect your eyes.) ¤ Finally, if your dried surface ended up matte in lieu of glossy, or fingerprinted, you can always pour another layer of resin. ¤ Good luck, and I hope this helps you avoid some of the errors and frustration.

First off - looks like a great project, so I went to Hobby Lobby to get the liquid. They don't carry it - sent me to Tap Plastics. It is not $10, it is $12.75. . . since I already had 25 pictures sorted and waiting to be picked up at Costco, so I sent through with it. $4.21. While I was at Tap, they showed that you need to use a layer of Modge Podge before using the 2 part stuff, or your project will turn brown. i hope there aren't any more surprises. . . This is getting more expensive than expected.
jenninsc said 5 years ago
I have a collection of stamps from travels and family that I want to do this with. I thought about doing it on a small wooden table with a rim. I assume it is the same process but putting the modge podge on first might be better. Been looking for the right table but a tray could work.

@Karla Cash - go to file>print. When you get the print dialog box, select PDF from the drop down menu. (On MAC the drop down will be on the lower right, not sure about PC.) Save the pdf to somewhere you can find it again. Open the pdf with Adobe Reader (free application) to check it. Send the pdf as an attachment to the email. Voila!

I've made trays using copies of old family pix from the 40's. Some were sepia colored and some were black and white. They turned out great! I used ModPodge on one and Annie Sloan dark wax on the other, which made it look dirty... I think I liked it better before adding the dark wax. Anyway, thanks for the great idea, can't wait to try the resin on my next one.

I made the tray. Used Elmers to glue the photos down, and then did the Mod Podge layer before doing the resin layer. I took a picture, but don't see anywhere to add it. . . Turned out great, but I doubt that it is dishwasher safe. .

I made this also, it turned out great! My two small grandkids helped me make it yesterday while their mom was at work. I let them help cut photos with a blunt tipped child's pair of scissors, and we used a child-safe glue stick to glue photos to the tray. I left two days for drying time. I'm going to have them help wrap it in the morning and they can give it to my daughter (their mommy) for mother's day!
