Letter From the Editor: June 2013

Jun 3, 2013

by Alison Feldmann handmade and vintage goods

Turquoise. Emerald. Ruby. Amethyst. Antique, contemporary, or in the raw, everyone has a personal favorite when it comes to gemstones — I’m an opal kinda gal, myself. In fact, we at the Etsy Blog find these natural wonders so intriguing that we’re dedicating the month of June to the pursuit of jewels and gemstones. We’ll be exploring the meanings behind birthstones, how to buy an engagement ring, jewel-toned shopping guides (isn’t emerald a beautiful color?), historical styles and trends in jewelry, and how-to projects that integrate your favorite crystals. Needless to say, we’re excited to spend more time in the Jewelry category, swimming around in a mountain of jewels like virtual Scrooge McDucks.

We’ll also be digging into all the products inspired by jewels. These are gem soaps!

We’ll be sharing our finds on Pinterest and Tumblr, in addition to the Etsy Blog. Follow along with the hashtag #GemstoneJune. What’s your favorite gemstone?

I used to collect gemstones and minerals as a kid. Lately I've been incorporating them into my work. I love how they never fail to surprise me as I smash a solid piece into bits. And the pieces themselves seem so much more grounded and elegant. This is a trend I am happy to see rising.

Love it! I tend create a lot of pieces that are strictly metal, but I'm a sucker for raw and rough gemstones and have to put them in pieces whenever I find particularly striking cuts and shapes. My favorites---druzy, geodes, pyrite and agate slices! Can't wait to see all the beauties your showcase. Hope to see some rock collections, rocks in decor, specimens and supplies too!

I love unique gemstones and alternatives to the traditional. Moonstones, labradorite, morganite and tourmalines are among my favorites! I'm excited to join your gemstone journey. Say that 3 times fast.

So thrilled to see gemstones being featured. I'm a sparkle kind of gal myself and love nearly all gemstones. Love colorful opals, rainbow fluorite, labradorite--see where I'm going with this? So many beauties that radiate colors. These make me happy. And I'm always on the lookout for sellers who are reputable, yet with affordable prices.
