Last-Minute Halloween: Tippi Hedren in “The Birds”

Oct 22, 2010

by Chappell Ellison

Etsy.com handmade and vintage goods

When it comes to suspense, no one does it like Hitchcock. Released in 1963, The Birds still ranks as one of the scariest movies on my personal list. If your costume situation is getting dire, look no further than Melanie Daniels, the scream queen of The Birds. Played by actress Tippi Hedren, Melanie spends much of the movie avoiding a barrage of birds while looking fabulous. A simple green dress and a few 1960s accessories are all you need to be your own Hitchcock heroine. But most importantly, make sure to adorn yourself with plenty of fake black birds. So practice that scream and start running from all those winged creatures!

My favorite movie. Hitchcock knew how to make a woman look beautiful, even when pursued by seagulls. Dressing vintage every day, not just on Halloween, is the secret. And if you want to wear birds on your head, by all means go for it!

I did that costume about 10 years ago... I had a vintage pink dress, mouton coat, white birds, and lots of fake blood... Hubby went as Norman Bates, dressed like his mother (complete with gray wig and fake rubber knife)... he sat in a rocking chair on our front porch to hand out candy, and the adults wouldn't come to the door! So much fun!
