Keep It Weird: Face Time

Jan 21, 2011

by Michelle Traub

Etsy.com handmade and vintage goods

At a poetry release party last week, a cheery couple in sweater vests approached me by the bowl of clementines in the corner. They introduced themselves with, “We see you every morning on the G train!”. As I peeled back the zesty citrus, basking in the glow from the neighboring neon foundry, I simply could not pretend that I recognized them. The very next morning, I pried the crooning ear buds out of my canals, tucked the limp novel back into my bag, and looked up. Sure enough, two familiar beaming faces greeted me. Lulled by the persistent tide in this sea of humanity, I have become numb to the visages before me. And so, Keep It Weird gently reminds me to spend a little more time face to face.

It is nice to have a small wake up call to tell you that a train ride is not always just getting you from point A to point B. Sometimes you need to look around you; some enjoy public transportation because of the different people you meet there. Thank you for sharing your story! On another note, the angry origami face mask is amazing! Hard to believe it is all paper

Kind of sad that we don't know most of the people who live close to us, such is the price we pay for a technologically advanced and specialized marketplace. In poorer countries where not everything can be found for sale with a click of a mouse (phone call, etc), knowing your neighbors is a survival necessity as people tend to rely more on each other for assistance, help, services, and goods. Love these fun and surreal selections!
