I'm sorry if I see Lil Alcoholic differently than what is was intended, but what does a person do with a picture of a little girl drinking? Yes, I know someone is giving her the booze, but how is this edifying? Is it a picture to be used in a child's AA meeting?

The image of a young girl being fed shots at what it appears to be against her will in a blog titled "Booze Hounds" and a picture called "Lil Alcoholic" kind of makes me sick. Who thought that was a good idea?

  • ChronologieVintage

    ChronologieVintage said 4 years ago

I hate to be negative, but as a mother I'm not thrilled seeing a graphic of a small child being given booze as a featured item in Etsy. Kind of tasteless? Inappropriate? I'm guessing the person who picked this out doesn't have kids? Just a thought.

  • ChronologieVintage

    ChronologieVintage said 4 years ago

Okay, I now see from the item description that she was actually being given wheat grass juice or something. Still, with a title like "Li'l Alcoholic," is this the image Etsy wants to project?

  • BackyardPhoto

    BackyardPhoto said 4 years ago

ChronologieVintage says: Okay, I now see from the item description that she was actually being given wheat grass juice or something. Still, with a title like "Li'l Alcoholic," is this the image Etsy wants to project? ---- I do agree with the posts like this. I don't think this should have been included. I just wonder how many people DID read the description. How many didn't? How many looked at it with disgust and decided to not come back. Nothing against the artist. I understand it was meant to be fun but it should be given a different title or something.

  • KawaiiBits

BackyardPhoto says: The image of a young girl being fed shots at what it appears to be against her will ---- I went back and looked at the photo more ( just glanced the last time) and yes, it does look like she is drunk and not wanting to drink.. Maybe i'm just looking into it too much?

I don't have children, but I'm afraid I have to weigh in on the subject of the "Lil Alcoholic". I agree that it doesn't seem appropriate to me either. And I guess I must be the one who is drunk because when I look at the description, I don't see anything about "wheat grass juice", and on which I agree with those who have pointed out, is not red. Wow, that was a really bad call on the part of Etsy to include this piece at all and especially as the first piece you see at the top of the post.

The picture 'Lil Alcoholic' should be deleted as it looks like child abuse. To glorify such a thing is totally disgusting. To paint such a horrible thing is perverted. Please think again, ETSY. I am REALLY sickened by this display and see that others posting here agree. To those of you who think it is funny ... well, I feel very sorry for you. And NO one in their right mind can say it is 'art'! I really didn't think ETSY would allow such a thing and am disappointed, to say the least.

As uncomfortable as I am with the picture - it is art. Art is often disturbing. The artist is quite talented and I looked at their other work and found I liked some of it quite a bit. Dark, disturbing, thought provoking. However, as much as I loath any attempt to censor art or artists, I do think Etsy could excercise some judgement in this case and remove the picture from their front page. I DO NOT think the piece should be removed from Etsy.

It's not child abuse...it's a painting. It's NOT real, not an actual picture of someone giving a child alcohol, therefore it can not be a child abuse. Now I don't understand what the artist is trying to say in the painting, but it is art..obviously.

They can't help it. They have to find something to complain about between Tea Party rallies. If the title did not say Lil' Alcoholic I would not have immediately assumed the child was being force fed alcohol. It could have been castor oil or cranberry juice for all I know. Perhaps it's a euphemism for society force feeding our children ignorance and intolerance.

  • mojo3777creations

    mojo3777creations said 4 years ago

very well said dragonpop! art comes in many forms, it doesn't mean everyone will like it... but someone will get it... this is not an actual girl being abused, it isn't much different than watching a child actress star in a horror movie, this child starred in a painting...

  • LittleLadyIrish

    LittleLadyIrish said 4 years ago

I don't see anything remotely resembling child porn here! That's a tad dramatic. I respect the freedom of the art world and with that comes things we may not all conform to. Art is diversity, love it for what it is. Or some day we may lose it for what it isn't.

  • kimsjewels

    kimsjewels said 4 years ago

I understand art is art and agree with not censoring etc. Out of context it's just a weird picture. I think the controversy is more the title of the blog "Booze Hounds," and then seeing that image of a child being fed shots by an adult hand, called "Lil Alcoholic" along with Author Michelle asking us what kind of booze gets us off. In the context of this blog specifically about being a "Booze Hound" it's tacky, regardless of what the description says she is being force fed. In a different scenario it might be just right, but when you put all that together with what etsy has set up here, it's a little too disturbing for an etsy blog post.

Unbelievable how much controversy little alcoholic has caused! I don't find it that disturbing, it should be viewed and interpreted in an allegorical sense, not literally. To me this painting symbolises how parents very often set the wrong examples for their children. This can be generalised, to how adults model a wrong behaviour for younger generations. Or how societies (naive as you'd expect a child to be-hence the allegory) can be misguided by those who hold powerful positions. Just a few thoughts that come to mind. Again, don't view it as a literal picture.

I'm not at all convinced by the "BUT, IT"S ART" bullcrap lame excuse! I'm sorry, call me old fashion but when anyone uses a image of a small, innocent, and defenseless child and turns it into something sick and twisted...it's just down right WRONG! Where do we draw the line on calling everything "ART"?? I mean, I can take a white leather handbag and smear dog crap all over it and call it ART too right? I mean, as long as I think its art in my mind right?? Get a grip, small children should be viewed as pure and angelic. There's noting hilarious or artistic about this piece! Keep it RIGHT!

BajaGypsy says: "Why would you show an adult giving a child alcohol.....Poor taste." I agree with BajaGypsy, it was a tasteless choice on Etsy's part. Personally the painting creeps me out, but I don't have anything bad to say about it really. It is interesting and well painted. I just don't think the subject matter is appropriate for the FP. It's a bit strong for the crafting side of the art community.

  • gremlygirl

    gremlygirl said 4 years ago

KimsJewels, you hit the nail on the head -- it's the fact that etsy featured "Lil Alcoholic" in a flippant blog post featuring the wonderful effects of boozin' and alcoholism that pushes this into poor taste to me. I like the painting: it's thought-provoking and yes, disturbing. It's etsy's "Yo! In your FACE!" attitude that I find grating. "This is weird and therefor it's cool and if you don't think so you're not hip!"

  • lynncorr

    lynncorr said 4 years ago

When I first opened the blog, I was very turned off by it but the photo of the child becoming the old woman obviously conveys how many older alcoholics got their start. There is a lot to think about here. But some of the related items seem to glorify drinking. I'm sorry to say, call me a prude but I wouldn't have them in my home. Those of us whose lives are deeply affected by someone else's addiction can't find them humorous. I'm definitely very selective in giving out favs to such items. There are a few artists on Etsy who dabble in borderline offensive. I try not to judge, but have a right not to patronize them. Lynn

    gremlygirl said 4 years ago

OhFaro, just because some of us are questioning etsy's taste in this blog post doesn't mean that we are unable to coexist with other sensibilities or accept differing lifestyles. I found the "Lil' Alcoholic" picture disturbing until I realized she was wearing a broad white bib - where was her neck? It looks like someone took a picture of a child having to take large quantities of a liquid medicine and thought the collection of shot glasses was amusing. Etsy sellers offer art made with placentas and semen. It's probably not the best idea to include this piece in a pro-alcohol article, but it's tame compared to some of the stuff you can find here.

O FFS, people, get your panties out of your tailholes, please. It is a poorly drawn picture of a child taking her medicine. The fact that it's included in an alcohol treasury is in questionable taste, but art is always subjective and often questionable. (The Ecstasy of St. Theresa, anyone?) So again, pull your panties out of your tailholes, because that CAN'T be comfortable, if you don't like the content of a blog or treasury then just toddle your little self right on by, and go forth and glue crap to other crap. As for me and my army, I have better things to do. CF4L and perkele.
