In a world where children’s playtime often falls in the minutes between iPad sessions, there’s something admirably quaint about creative play with a paper doll. After all, what could be more imaginative than giving life to a piece of illustrated cardstock?
Paper doll artist Hannah Stevenson of Lily and Thistle found inspiration for her line of download-and-print paper dolls after starting a family. Contemplating her shop’s beginnings, she says, “I’ve always loved paper dolls and was excited to share my love with my children. However, when I looked for dolls to start saving for them, I found that the choices were seriously lacking — so I started making my own.”
In addition to paper dolls, Hannah has also created illustrated coloring books and historical-inspired paper doll clothing collections. But in her eyes, there’s no better doll than one that’s customized to look like the child playing with it. “The idea of being able to personalize the dolls was something I was really excited about. My husband, who’s a software engineer by trade, helped me learn how to digitize my drawings and made it possible to customize the dolls.”
After creating thousands of custom paper dolls, Hannah has it down to a science. “Customers simply choose from the hairstyle, hair color, skin tone, and eye color options in my shop, and I go from there.”
Fives years in, Hannah has sent paper dolls to locales as far-flung as Germany, Russia, Holland, Portugal, Ghana and Japan. When asked to name the most notable custom dolls she’s created, she said, “The most memorable dolls were for customers who sponsor girls and boys in impoverished countries. Because of customs restrictions, sponsors are limited to sending paper products (usually just a few sheets of paper), so paper dolls are a fun thing for children to receive. It makes my heart so happy to imagine children who have so little, playing with their own personalized dolls.”
Learn more about Hannah and her paper dolls in this short video that she recently shared on her Etsy About page. As she says in the video, “Paper dolls are magical — at least, they’re magic for me. They nurture imagination, they celebrate the beauty and innocence of girlhood, they’re a nostalgic childhood memory, and they’re something that many of us share.”

Paper dolls were absolutely my favorite toy as a child. I was lucky enough to have a sister-in-law who was an artist and she made me my very own personalized paper dolls when I was about 3 or 4. Love that children today (I'm 36 now) can still discover the world of paper dolls.

I'm 57 years old so growing up in the 60's as a little girl we played with our paper dolls. You would get them in a book much like what a coloring book looked like with the push out paper dolls and the clothes. I loved playing endless hours with my paper dolls and I would keep them in a box like a box that you would buy at Christmas for clothes with the top and bottom to it and if I didn't have one of those then I kept my paper dolls in a shoe box. When I grew up got married and had my daughter she is now 36 but I was so surprised that it was so hard to find paper dolls for her I could not believe how times had changed and something so simple and fun was so hard to find but now I see that the simple and beautiful things like playing with paper dolls are back and you have created your own line and now we can order them customized I am so glad that you have designed a wonderful line I'll have to order some for my grand daughter she's 5 year's old . Congratulations on being featured and much continued success to you!

this is so fun! :) i just babysat for a girl the other day who got a book of children to put clothes stickers on...to dress them up for different things...and she LOVED it. I can't even imagine how much she would have loved to get to dress a doll of herself!

So beautiful! Love that you're able to do custom dolls for kids across the world! Such beautiful magic that brings to their lives! I remember playing with them myself when I was a kid, and I got a kick out of it when my aunt gave my 3 year old daughter star wars themed paper dolls! I'll need to check out your shop for my 2 lil ones! ;) Also, I LOVE reading stories about shops becoming successful by moms! I started my Etsy shop after my first was born and also worked while she napped. My 2nd though apparently only cat naps and so it's been quite the challenging year for me! But wonderful success and I wish you the best! <3

This is such an awesome shop. I loved paper dolls. I played with them for hours. I made clothes for them and colored them and had so much fun. I loved creating new outfits for different occasions. I have wonderful memories playing with paper dolls. Now I sew and make all kind of clothes and accessories. I wish you great success.

I think that this is actually a great idea because of the visibility it gives to minority groups. Children of color deserve dolls that look like them. Although this may not have been your original intention, it does help contribute to a solution.

I'm a new mom and I'm completely hooked on personalization, especially when it comes to gifts for my daughter. And my nieces and nephews, and really anyone I love! I take gift giving seriously....which may sound silly! But it's important to me to find items that I know are unique and going to be loved. That can be a difficult thing to do. It takes extra time, sometimes money, and energy to find those items. These customized paper dolls are one great example of this. Thanks for what you do!
