Get hooked! For this week’s Craft Night, Drew Emborsky — also known as The Crochet Dude — is visiting the Etsy Labs in Brooklyn, NY for an evening dedicated to his craft of choice. Drew has his own collection of crochet tools and is the crochet expert on the television show Knit & Crochet Now!, currently airing nationwide on PBS.

On Monday, June 20, we’ll cut up fabric scraps and old t-shirts into strips to make recycled yarn, which we’ll use to crochet trivets with giant blue crochet hooks.

Please bring discarded clothing and fabric scraps for your project.

About This Week’s Teacher

I’m Drew Emborsky, a.k.a. The Crochet Dude. My mom first taught me to knit when I was 5  years old, while we were snowbound in Lake Tahoe. After studying fine art in college and doing the “starving artist” thing for a few years, I found solace in crocheting for charity while grieving the passing of my mother. It was during this time with the charity group that I was dubbed “The Crochet Dude,” which eventually led to the launch of my blog in 2005. I blog and create from my studio in Houston, TX with my cats, Chandler and Cleocatra.

The Details:

Where:  55 Washington Street, Suite 712  (7th floor), Brooklyn, New York, 11201
When
: Monday, June 20. Demos will be held in person at 4:15 p.m. & 6:15 p.m.
RSVP:
here.
Webcast: For those of you who can’t make it in person, we’ll be doing a live demo via Livestream at 3:30 p.m. ET. You can check out the feed right on the Etsy Community page.

How great your Mom taught you these skills. I am sure she would be/was so proud of you. I am a crazy quilter & make a cq for each of my grandkids. The boys seem the most interested in what I am doing with embroidery work on them. My 7 yr. old grandson embroidered a dog on his cousin's quilt piece I was working on the other day. I think teaching boys things like this is great. Congrats on a great interview/article.

I love crochet even though I'm just a newbie on this art, but I have to say this: Crochet always gives us a way to express our emotions. When we are happy we can create beautiful master pieces with our hooks and a little bit of yarn or thread; when we are sad or going through a bad situation it prevents us from thinking over and over again and hurting ourselves with those thoughts and while we finish whatever we are crocheting we discover that the worries have been diminished. I absolutely think that crochet is the best therapy that we can ever find for stress.

Crochet is like riding a bike, once you learn you never forget.....I was also taught crochet at an early age. My older sister was a wiz at it and thought I need to know every stitch of this once dying art. I only mastered a few pieces but my sister crocheted many wonderful things, the most wonderful being her wedding dress...so romantic . Also my sister crocheted itsy, bitsy jointed bears out of the tiniest of threads. I still have two of them that l closely treasure.

Your rug reminds me of my mother! She made a huge rag rug like that for her computer room floor. Now that she has passed on, I feel the need to preserve her traditions. I totally see why you're the crochet dude.

shunklies that's precisely what I thought! I was all excited about the crochet but was saddened that a knitting picture was used. I sound like a crochet snob but crochet is such a big underdog to knitting and most people don't know what crochet is! When I'm CIP (crocheting in public) sometimes people ask me, "What are you knitting?" Arrrrgh! I politely say, "I'm crocheting a 'x'." Ok enough ranting. :-) I wanted to be at this event but alas! I didn't put it in my planner. Shame on me; time to see if I can watch a recording of it. :-) (\__/) (\__/) (='.'=) (='.'=) (")_(") (")_(")

Nothing better than the feel of soft squishy yarn, but I may just give t-shirt material a shot. I tried cotton materieal and it was a mess (lots of raveling), I'm thinkin' t-shirt cotton won't be as bad. It's worth a try. Thanks for the incentive.

My grandmother made rugs by crocheting potatoe sacks and used kitchen towels. I've been collecting table cloths from garage sales. With the help of the Crochet Guy, I can now make one. Thank you.
